Broward County Sheriff: 'Of course I won't resign'

Source: The Hill

BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 02/25/18 09:54 AM EST

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said Sunday he will not resign from his position despite criticism over his department’s handling of the Florida school shooting and red flags raised prior to the incident about the suspect.

During a half-hour interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Israel pushed back against criticism that his department did not adequately respond to the shooting or appropriately follow up on prior tips about the alleged shooter, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz.

“Of course I won’t resign,” Israel told “State of the Union.” Tapper specifically asked the sheriff about a letter written by Florida State Rep. Bill Hager (R) to Gov. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) arguing Israel should resign following the school shooting that left 17 people dead when a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

“It was a shameful letter. It was politically motivated,” Israel said. “I never met that man. He doesn’t know anything about me. And the letter was full of misinformation.”

Stone helped Israel get elected using Republican tactics.

No Democrat should trust anyone who associates with Roger Stone!

The Dirty Trickster
Campaign tips from the man who has done it all.

By Jeffrey Toobin
June 2, 2008 Issue

Stone moved to Washington to attend George Washington University, but he became so engrossed in Republican politics that he never graduated. He was just nineteen when he played a bit part in the Watergate scandals. He adopted the pseudonym Jason Rainier and made contributions in the name of the Young Socialist Alliance to the campaign of Pete McCloskey, who was challenging Nixon for the Republican nomination in 1972. Stone then sent a receipt to the Manchester Union Leader, to “prove” that Nixon’s adversary was a left-wing stooge. Stone hired another Republican operative, who was given the pseudonym Sedan Chair II, to infiltrate the McGovern campaign. Stone’s Watergate high jinks were revealed during congressional hearings in 1973, and the news cost Stone his job on the staff of Senator Robert Dole. Stone then moved into the world of political consulting, to which he was temperamentally better suited than government service. He co-founded the National Conservative Political Action Committee, which spent money in support of candidates, including Chuck Grassley, of Iowa, and Dan Quayle, in Indiana, who were instrumental in the G.O.P. takeover of the Senate.

Stone revels in his Watergate pedigree, noting almost apologetically that he was never accused of breaking any law. “The Democrats were weak, we were strong,” he told me. (Stone’s rules: “Attack, attack, attack—never defend” and “Admit nothing, deny everything, launch counterattack.”) In Nixon’s later years, Stone organized a series of dinners at the former President’s home in New Jersey, where groups of journalists would listen to the great man’s monologues about world events. “Of course a lot of the journalists hated Nixon, but they were always blown away by how smart he was,” Stone said.

<SNIP>

In 1976, Stone was named national youth director for Reagan’s first, failed run for the Republican nomination. Four years later, after serving on various young-Republican task forces, Stone asked the leaders of Reagan’s next campaign for the toughest assignment they had. They made Stone, who was in his late twenties, political director of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The region hardly looked like Reagan country, but Stone found a new mentor to help him. “I was invited to a party by a socialite named Sheila Mosler, and Roy Cohn was there,” Stone said, as the captain delivered an order of “21” ’s steak tartare. “Roy was a Democrat, but he was an anti-Communist and a master of public relations, and he wanted to help me with Reagan. He told me to come see him at his town house.

<SNIP>

Stone did not enter the government after Reagan won the election. Instead, he started a political-consulting and lobbying firm with several co-workers from the campaign. The name of the operation went through several iterations, but it was perhaps best known as Black, Manafort, Stone & Atwater, the latter being Lee Atwater, who had worked briefly in the Reagan White House’s political office. The partners made their money by charging blue-chip corporate clients such as Ronald Perelman’s MacAndrews & Forbes and Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. large fees to lobby their former campaign colleagues, many of whom had moved into senior posts in the new Administration. There were also less savory clients—Zaire’s Mobuto Sese Seko, Angola’s UNITA rebels, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos. Stone and his wife at the time, Ann, became famous for their lavish life style, which included a chauffeur-driven Mercedes and tailor-made clothes. They threw raucous parties for no reason or for almost no reason, like Calvin Coolidge’s birthday.

That article is from nearly ten years ago - Stone has not sat on his ass since then.

Broward sheriff, 'dirty trickster' forge unlikely tie

By Brittany Wallman, Sun Sentinel
August 16, 2014

A campaign operative who built his career on smearing political enemies, publicly calls women the C-word and consulted for attorney-turned-Ponzi-schemer Scott Rothstein has become one of Sheriff Scott Israel's trusted political guides.

The sheriff's relationship with Roger Stone is a bond of contradictions, tying Broward's highest-ranking Democrat with a longtime Republican-turned-Libertarian. The sheriff is a man of old-fashioned manners who rarely curses, and who talks about integrity at every turn. Stone hurls profanity at women on social networks, and once called Sheriff Israel "an unqualified punk, a racist and a thief.''

<SNIP>

Stone helped get Broward Sheriff Israel elected. And now, Stone has the sheriff's ear.

When Israel took the sheriff's helm in early 2013, in the first five months he added to BSO's payroll Stone's book-writing partner, Stone's book publicist and Stone's long-time executive assistant. He had Stone's stepson transferred to detective, though it was early in his career, with just two years at the Sheriff's Office.

Stone's connections to BSO reach higher. His longtime friend Ron Gunzburger, who connected him with Sheriff Israel in the first place, is the agency's general counsel.

At this point I would call Sheriff Israel a DINO, not a true Democrat.

Sheriff Scott Israel makes new hires to 'connect with community'
11 'specialists,' 'liaisons' hired, several with political ties to sheriff

By Bob Norman - Investigative Reporter

But one of those hires, at an annual $45,000 salary, is a freelance reporter named Mike Colapietro. He's from New York, and his only tie to Broward appears to be that he co-wrote a book with political dirty trickster Roger Stone, who strongly backed Israel this past election season. The recently published book is a conspiratorial tale alleging that Lyndon Baines Johnson killed John F. Kennedy.

Colapietro is at least the second associate of Stone, the former political director of Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein, hired by BSO since Israel took office.

Stone's long-time assistant, Dianne Thorne, was also hired as a "community specialist" at a salary of $60,000 a year. Thorne was the founder of the so-called "Miami Tea Party," which smeared Israel's opponents in the last election with misleading robo-calls. The Australian-born Thorne lives in Miami.

Stone is known for dredging up titillating tidbits from a candidate's past and presenting it in the worst possible light. He's been known to infiltrate an opponent's campaign, and to distort the truth in misleading robocalls to voters, with fake caller ID labels.

But Israel said he has no criticisms of Stone's negative campaign tactics, even those used against him.

Israel said it's clear Stone is effective. When Stone was against him, he lost. When Stone was on his side, he won.

"For him to be on my side," Israel said, "I'm very fortunate."

should resign, is the Putin elected president. His presidency is a fraud. He has hired incompatant aides who constantly show themselves to be incapable of doing the jobs he gave them. For someone who claims to be a "successful businessman" he has lousy taste in people, or else he attracts the DREGS. They all seem to be as unethical and useless as he is. Maybe he is afraid to hire good people, in case they show him up as a waste of space?

in his dept. to act. It is an 'accredited agency' which means its has to have hundred of standard and procedures, written & in place. It also has to demonstrate to outside evaluator's that these standard and procedures are understood and followed up and down the chain of command.

I am very familiar with Scott Israel as I supported his opponent in his first campaign, an eminently qualified lifelong Democrat who lost the primary by a handful of votes.
It was well known that Scott had recently changed his party affiliation to run in the deep blue county of Broward. It was also known that his campaign was run by a very savvy and connected political operative and used very good use of every trick and advantage available. I did not know Stone was involved, but not surprising.

He has never struck me as being particularly bright but he has aligned himself as a Democrat since that first run and his Republican opponents have been awful, so we have supported him. This may very well open up the primary.
