A white man has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of first-degree murder after shooting an unarmed black man. The man called 911 and reported hoodlums before he shot 20-year-old Kouren-Rodney Thomas, killing him.
The jury spent less than two hours deliberating on Thursday before finding Chad Copley guilty of premeditated murder. He shot and killed Kouren-Rodney Thomas who was attending a party in the area.
During the trial, prosecutors argued that Copley seemed bent on committing violence when he called 911 and said he was locked and loaded to confront those he described as armed hoodlums.
CBS reports that he said to the operator, We got a bunch of hoodlums out here racing. I am locked and loaded and I am going outside to secure my neighborhood. You need to send PD as quickly as possible. I am going to secure my neighborhood. I am on the neighborhood watch. I am going to have my neighbors with me.

Just 'cause you wear a sweater vest and look like Bubbles on Trailer Park Boys doesn't mean you're harmless.

(19,204 posts)how many white supremacist tattoos are covered up under his geek outfit? He looks like someone who's "familiar" with the justice system.
There's not a doubt in my mind who this asshole voted for in 2016. One less Republican voter, so that's always a good thing. It's a crying shame Kouren-Rodney Thomas had to lose his life because of this racist piece of shit though.

(8,311 posts)Sadly I'm pretty familiar with self-defense laws in my state with firearms. I let a girl stay with me while she was out on bail after shooting, though not killing, where she pled justification. She was acquitted.
In her case, she was acquitted partly because he admitted on the stand not believing the gun was real after she aimed it at him to distract him and started coming at her, partly because she was in the situation because his wife had called her for help to get out of an already court-documented DV situation and other than drawing the firearm her other choice was to let him drag his wife out of the vehicle through the window like he was trying, and partly because rural Arkansans tend to think a 5'1 woman with a .22 shooting a methed-out wifebeater who arrived to discover his wife leaving him and tried to physically interfere qualifies as "service to the community". Only the first two could be taken into consideration officially.
NC's laws are similar to Arkansas's. My bad experience personally with a gun was prompted because my drunk stepfather wanted to violate them by going back into his house and getting a firearm then going outside the residence again to "scare off" the person he was fighting with verbally. That would have legally been aggravated assault. I stood between him and the front door and when Mom's attempt to sweet-talk him into putting it down was just resulting in her being covered by the muzzle (and I knew he had poor trigger finger discipline) I got his attention and verbally disarmed him, but more in the tones of a drill sergeant than a frightened woman. It's not fun to have one aimed at you even if you don't think he'd intentionally shoot. But if he took it outside, or fired through a window, that would not have been protected by law.
Who those laws sre designed to protect are the victims of the very rare cases where someone apparently violent breaks IN to the home and encounters someone armed. The gun humpers amp up those 911 calls so if you're really interested you can search YouTube. One case I remember was a woman by herself, rural Oklahoma, someone either intoxicated or mentally disturbed was trying to break in, you can hear him yelling some crazy crap in the call. She's got the gun ready, saying she doesn't want to shoot but she's scared, get officers there quickly, etc. Only when he finally breaks through and gets inside the house do you hear the commotion, a shot, and her crying hysterically over having killed a man.
If she'd shot through the door at him, she'd be in jail.
