"Breaking: 3-Judge Federal Court (All R Nominees) Rejects PA Congressional Redistricting Challenge" fits - could you change it to that, please? (I'm an LBN host, so I guarantee we'll be happy with that)

(101,321 posts)Yes, DU limits the characters. As hosts, we're OK with judicious editing of titles in cases like this - your change is good.

(145,321 posts)My first inclination was to edit but I resisted. You have no idea as to how hard it is for a lawyer to resist editing something. In this case, the law professor was too wordy and I knew that I could do better

(145,321 posts)This article has a better title https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/federal-judges-reject-gop-lawsuit-pennsylvania-district-map
The judges said Monday they have no authority to act in the matter except to throw out the case.
The decision comes with a day left for the states congressional candidates to circulate petitions to get on the May 15 primary ballot.
The Democratic majority on the state Supreme Court ruled in January that the map Republicans crafted in 2011 amounted to an unconstitutional gerrymander.
Warning-SCOTUS has to still rule

(32,645 posts)Unless something has changed in the last 2 weeks, we already know that SCOTUS doesn't want to hear this.
The GOP is just wasting everybody's time.
I guess that means the issue is dead and the new PA district map will stand until the 2020 Census. This is a great ruling for not just Pennsylvania, but *every state* that's fighting this pernicious rightwing gerrymandering issue.
This is a victory for all of us.

(145,321 posts)The PA supreme court ruled that based on the PA state constitution, the current Congressional maps were not proper and ordered new maps. This is a purely state law issue which is why the federal court rejected jurisdiction.
The SCOTUS had previously declined to find federal jurisdiction but the latest appeal has been pending for a while and I am getting nervous

(15,286 posts)Exellent.
Instead of negotiating with Gov Wolf for a new map that might have been a bit more favorable to the GOP, they decided to throw a hissy fit and go to court. Now they have a map that's not as favorable for the next 6 years. Boo hoo.

(129,096 posts)The Supreme Court on Monday turned down a request from Pennsylvania Republican legislative leaders to block the implementation of a redrawn congressional map that creates more parity between the political parties in the state.
It was the second time that the court declined to get involved in the partisan battle that has roiled Pennsylvania politics. The commonwealths highest court earlier this year ruled that a map drawn by the Republicans leaders in 2011 clearly, plainly and palpably violated the Free and Equal Elections Clause of the Pennsylvania constitution.
The U.S. Supreme Court deliberated nearly two weeks before turning down the request to stop the map from being used in this falls elections. Generally the justices stay out of the way when a states highest court is interpreting its own state constitution.
The practical impact is the 2018 elections are likely to be held under a map much more favorable to Democrats, who scored a surprising victory last week in a special election. The 2011 map that has been used this decade has resulted in Republicans consistently winning 13 of the states 18 congressional seats.

(15,303 posts)I feel sort of sorry for people who are stupid because their stupid parent somehow mingled their genes with a stupid relative.
I don't feel so sorry for people who get all of their news and talking points from a very limited source. They may have been genetically predisposed to do so, but I'll assume that 90% are just willingly intellectually lazy and want to hear what their bully in the pulpit is telling them.
