More Than 100,000 California Teenagers Are Now Preregistered To Vote

It’s the result of major efforts in the state to increase youth civic engagement.
By Antonia Blumberg

Over 100,000 16- and 17-year-olds in California are now preregistered to vote, the state’s Secretary of State Alex Padilla announced on Friday.

Roughly 38 percent of those teenagers registered as Democrat, and 10 percent registered as Republican, with a smattering of other party affiliations represented, according to data released by Padilla’s office. The greatest percentage ― just over 43 percent ― registered with no party preference.

The achievement comes amid a nationwide tide of youth activism over gun control and marks the outcome of recent efforts in the state to increase civic engagement among youth.

“We are seeing the impact that young people can have when they stand up and engage,” Padilla said in a statement. “Since California launched pre-registration, 100,000 soon-to-be voters have answered the call to participate in their democracy. As Secretary of State, I want to do all we can to encourage civic engagement among our youth.”

3. I was going to say that this might not do us much good in California.

Then I thought about the possibility of the Dems flipping some of the red districts in California.

We need all the flips we can get in order to take back the House.

Perhaps compulsory voter registration for 18 year olds is an idea worth pursuing.

5. Don't 18 year old voters often vote like their parents? 38% seems awful low for Dems.

It could be conservative parents telling their kids (who don't care anything about voting) to register to vote, and then tell them to vote GOP.
Okay! I admit it! That's what happened to me.

I did not know he could 'pre-register'. I'll definitely get him on it right away. Add another 1 to the democratic party.

13. Immediate impact...?

Immediate impact #1: Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina, Utah, Maine, Nevada, West Virginia; all "red" states that allow registration at age 16 to be voters when they turn 18.

Then there are the "red" states that already allow registrations if they will turn 18 by the next (general) election.

Immediate impact #2: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

That's 27 states. That's 54 Senators. It's also 209 members of the House. Not all Republicans in both houses, but the R's own the majority in those states! So get registered and GOTV!

Going to be an interesting year!

"So many of our Christians have what I call the goo-goo syndrome: good government. They want everybody to vote. I don't want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people, they never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down." - Paul Weyrich, to the 15,000 conservative preachers at the "Religious Roundtable", Dallas, Texas, August 1980.
