(32,086 posts)I heard about this before I went to bed last night, but I didn't know the toll until this morning. I was already sad because one of my favorite players will be retiring after tonight's game. And, the Blackhawks did a "One Last Shift" celebration of my all-time favorite, Stan Mikita. Except his grandsons represented him as he coudln't be there, because he suffers from the same form of dementia that killed Robin Williams. But, the latter two pale in comparison to what happened up in Saskatchwan. Been crying all morning.

(254 posts)My nephew used to play in this league and my wife grew up with the previous coach. There are so many connections to hockey anywhere but especially so when youre from as small a province as Saskatchewan. The hospital in my hometown is looking after many of the survivors. This truly is a heartbreaking day.

(1,336 posts)the coach of the boys' hockey team. He died, along with 13 of his young players. There are so many buses travelling all over Canada and the northern U.S. during the winter filled with young hockey teams going from game to game -- through all sorts of horrendous weather -- that it's only a surprise that this sort of tragedy doesn't happen more often.
Parents of kids who play sports like hockey, football etc. have so many things to worry about -- concussions, bus crashes.

(44,228 posts)This has hit Canada hard. So many of us grew up playing hockey. So many of us know about know about bus rides between games and tournaments. So many have kids, or nieces and nephews, or grandkids, or friends, still riding those buses.
I don't think I've ever posted a GoFundMe link before. I'm doing so now.

(44,228 posts)We are heartbroken knowing many of those we lost had their entire lives in front of them. We grieve with those facing news no parent or family should ever have to face. And our hearts go out to the community that has lost teammates, coaches, friends, and mentors.
This is every parents worst nightmare. No one should ever have to see their child leave to play the sport they love and never come back.
Our national hockey family is a close one, with roots in almost every town small and big across Canada. Humboldt is no exception, and today the country and the entire hockey community stands with you.
I thank the first responders the RCMP, the Provincial Response Team, and medical personnel who worked tirelessly through the night, and continue to respond to this incredibly difficult situation with courage and professionalism.
To the entire Humboldt community: We are here for you. As neighbours, as friends, and as Canadians, we grieve alongside you.
