Ex-Speaker John Boehner Joins Marijuana Firm's Advisory Board

Source: Bloomberg

The U.S. marijuana industry has a new spokesman: John Boehner.

The Republican former Speaker of the House has joined the advisory board of Acreage Holdings, a company that cultivates, processes and dispenses cannabis in 11 U.S. states. Boehner’s endorsement, after saying nine years ago he was “unalterably opposed” to legalization, could be considered a watershed event: Marijuana has gone mainstream.

“Over the last 10 or 15 years, the American people’s attitudes have changed dramatically,” he said in an interview. “I find myself in that same position.”

Former Massachusetts Governor William Weld will join Boehner on the advisory board of Acreage, which holds 35 licenses for cannabis businesses in the U.S. Boehner, 68, was first elected to the House of Representatives from Southwest Ohio in 1990. He was Speaker from 2011 to 2015, when he resigned amid problems with an increasingly fractious Republican caucus. Since then, he’s served as a board member for tobacco company Reynolds American Inc. and adviser for global law firm Squire Patton Boggs US LLP. Weld, 72, who was governor from 1991 to 1997, was the Libertarian Party’s candidate for vice president in 2016.

Daughter of US House speaker marries Jamaican dreadlocks
Wednesday, May 15, 2013

FLORIDA, United States (CMC) — The elder daughter of the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives John Boehner has tied the knot with her dread-locked, Jamaican-born construction worker boyfriend.

. . .

Dominic was arrested in 2006 for possessing marijuana, with the arresting officer reporting that Lakhan admitted to possessing it for "personal use".

This is the Jamaican-born fiancé of House Speaker John Boehner's daughter, pictured just weeks before their upcoming nuptials.

The construction worker was spotted enjoying a McDonalds in Florida recently, with his dreadlocks piled high on his head underneath a knitted cap.

Dominic Lakhan, 38, has been arrested for possessing marijuana in the past. This may not have gone down well with Boehner - who is a staunch opponent to legalizing the drug.

Apparently it's a much better choice for people's health than was the industry he used to serve when he was in Congress:

Documents Reveal Boehner Is A Shill For Tobacco And The Kochs

By Eric Zuesse

. . .

McKitrick’s memo went on to discuss “4. House Republican Conference - CSE [the Kochs] sits at table with Boehner concerning Republican priorities. Look for opportunities here for CSE in moving with other groups to FDA.” So: the tobacco industry relied crucially on help from Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Republican House Majority Leader Dick Armey, and the current Republican House Speaker John Boehner, all of whom shill shamelessly for the most corrupt and harmful corporations.

. . .

As for John Boehner: he’s merely a servant of the aristocracy, representing the interests of the plutocrats who have placed a choke-hold on democracy: on the Federal Government of the U.S.A. They don’t like democracy; so, they do everything they can to block it from functioning. That’s what it’s all about.

Boehner’s top 20 donors in the 2013-14 political season include Reynolds Tobacco (Reynolds American) at #4, Philip Morris (Altria Group) at #10, and Koch Industries at #17; but the other 17 are energy, mining, and Wall Street firms. Boehner’s top 20 career donors also include both of the tobacco giants, but not Koch. That donor-list, too, is dominated by energy, mining, and Wall Street.

Boehner joins board of tobacco giant Reynolds American
BY MEGAN R. WILSON - 09/15/16 10:20 AM EDT

Former Speaker John Bohener (R-Ohio) has joined the board of directors at the tobacco company Reynolds American.

He will also be on the board’s corporate governance, nominating and sustainability committee, the company said.

. . .

In one of his first major controversies in Congress, Boehner in 1996 was caught handing out campaign contributions from tobacco lobbyists on the House floor, right before a vote on federal subsidies for the industry. The industry kept its subsidies.

Boehner later said that he regretted handing out the checks, though it was not against House rules at the time.

... he seemed like a guy who could turn it off after 5 p.m. and just be normal when he wasn't at work. He displayed a sense of humor (as did Obama) that is completely lacking in today's Republicans. He seems like somebody's uncle that gets loaded at your backyard barbecue. I guess I kind of miss that.

I loved it when I first saw it.

It reminded me that political opponents could be collegial and friendly if they wanted to be. However much fire-breathing can be effective for garnering campaign contributions, votes, and media attention, it's a poison in the body-politic.
