Paul Ryan confidants say he's not running again

Last edited Wed Apr 11, 2018, 09:37 AM - Edit history (1)

Source: AXIOS

House Speaker Paul Ryan has told confidants that he will announce soon that he won't run for reelection in November, according to sources with knowledge of the conversations.

Why it matters: House Republicans were already in very tough spot for midterms, with many endangered members and the good chance that Democrats will win the majority.

This decision has been long rumored but his final deliberations were held extremely closely.
Ryan, 48, was the Republican vice presidential nominee in 2012, and has long harbored presidential ambitions. Friends say he could make another run in the future.
Friends say that after Ryan passed tax reform, his longtime dream, he was ready to step out of a job that has become endlessly frustrating, in part because of President Trump.
Friends say Ryan was contemplating a minority or slim majority and decided that there was no good time to leave it was time for at least a stint in private life.

What comes next: The two most likely to replace him are Kevin McCarthy and Steve Scalise, though Scalise has said he wont run against McCarthy, who appears to have first bite at the Apple.

UPDATE FROM NYT:
Speaker Paul Ryan Will Not Seek Re-Election in November
By JONATHAN MARTIN and ALEXANDER BURNSAPRIL 11, 2018

Mr. Ryans retirement will kick off a succession battle for the leadership of the House Republican Conference, likely between the House majority leader, Kevin McCarthy of California, and the House majority whip, Steve Scalise of Louisiana.

It could also trigger another wave of retirements among Republicans not eager to face angry voters in the fall and taking their cue from Mr. Ryan.

Mr. Ryans intentions were first reported on the website Axios.

I thought for some time this would be the case. He's been so quiet, so complacent, so disengaged, since the tax cut bill passed, that I suspected his job was done, and now he could get a YUGE paycheck from a corporate job in payment of the YUGE tax cut bill. He'll live the rest of his life in a very comfortable situation. Lots of money rolling in, most of which he doesn't have to pay taxes on.

His job is done.

In light of these brutal tactics, a growing number of progressives have questioned whether ICE is past the point of reform. Sean McElwee, a policy analyst who helped start the movement to abolish ICE, has been pressing congressional candidates on their positions toward the agency, which was created just 15 years ago. Thus far, 14 Democrats have announced their support for defunding or abolishing ICE. This week, Randy Bryce, a candidate in Wisconsin who is vying for the seat that now belongs to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, became perhaps the most high-profile Democrat to declare that he wants to abolish the agency. A December poll commissioned by Democrats found a tight race, with Ryan holding a 6-point lead.

Apr 2018
https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/paul-ryan-keeps-it-family-kevin-mccarthy-russia-trump

Dana Rohrabacher is a Republican from California with a peculiar amalgam of views: pro-marijuana, dubious about climate change, pro-torture. For this last position, in 2007, Keith Olbermann awarded him his periodic “Worst Person in the World” award, on his old MSNBC show. Like Trump, Rohrabacher has been highly solicitous of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Last year, Politico ran an article on Rohrabacher called “Putin’s Favorite Congressman.”

In the Post piece, McCarthy’s remark is met with laughter, and Ryan cautions his colleagues, “This is an off the record . . . No leaks! . . . All right?”

And then, amid more laughter, Ryan says, “This is how we know we’re a real family here.”

“That’s how you know that we’re tight,” Steve Scalise, the House Majority Whip, says.

“What’s said in the family stays in the family,” Ryan concludes.

Other gop retiree's have been critical of trump since they are free from election worries. Ryan hasn't. That means gop leadership is still backing spanky and the gang.

Ryan is ambitious nd surely sees himself in the wh. His only shot is impeachment of potus and vpotus in quick succession. It ain't gonna happen.

But it will be interesting to see what he does in 2020 if trump is too wounded to make it through a primary.. He's way too young and wealthy to retire completely.

Then this asshole attacked human beings wanting higher "wages" mandated on the federal level: the top 1% since 1979 have had a 138% wage increase, while other slobs only got 15% since 1979...................

Then this asshole and his "tax cut", corporations have it until the republic goes completely broke, while the middle class and the working poor have only "two years" of tax cuts then it starts going back up-------------what a fucking asshole

What a fucking asshole and he should be treated as a fucking "ayn rand" asshole

doesn’t have to deal with Trump, and can emerge from the smoke and rubble unscathed to be the R nominee in 2020. Quite a strategic move. And even if the Repukes lose both House and Senate in the midterms, the deficit will be so yuuuuge and government will be in such tatters that it will take years to fix things.
Or he may know that he is in trouble with the Mueller investigation and is planning his legal defense.
I just don’t believe that anyone like Ryan willingly gives up power. There is some angle here. It’s hard to figure out the thought processes of someone older than an adolescent who is still fascinated by Ayn Rand.

It’s a long way to 2020, and we take things for granted at our peril. If the Repukes dump Trump, or he “retires” due to ill health, and Ryan temporarily acts just reasonable enough to pull some votes from swing voters, and Trumpians are mollified somehow, I could see him (or perhaps Romney) getting in. It is a recurring nightmare of mine.

Because the first phase of his dream legislation is going to crash the economy with major deficits.

The Tax Reform Package once fully enacted will cause major economic upheavals. He knows people will be out for his scalp.

Phase two is his machete austerity package. With ruthless cuts to so called "Entitlement Programs". The next speaker will slip those through if the blue wave does not totally decimate the Rethug Party to the back burners.

Ryan can see the writing on the wall - his draconian economic measures makes him one of the most hated people in America. Political vomit spit up by the Koch Bros. who's only goal is to dismantle the New Deal and privatize every facet of the US government with the single intent to bring more money and power to the filthy and obscene rich.

Paul Ryan served them well and will be richly rewarded with a multitude of board of directors chair offerings. Ryan's government pension plus his thank you income from the captains of industry will cover all his financial needs and beyond.
