Pennsylvania School District Arms Teachers With Baseball Bats
Source: U.S. News
A Pennsylvania school district is arming its teachers with baseball bats to defend themselves and students against potential gunmen in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Officials from the Millcreek School District in Erie, Pennsylvania distributed 16-inch baseball bats to its 500 teachers as a "last resort," district Superintendent William Hall, told Erie News Now.
"This is a tool to have in the event we have nothing else," said Cacchione. "Part of the formula now is to fight back, and so I think the bats that were provided for the staff were symbolic of that."
This isn't the only Pennsylvania school district to provide teachers with defensive tools. In March, Blue Mountain School District, located about 90 miles northwest of Philadelphia, armed its teachers with buckets of rocks.

Can see it now...
In the near future, a gun owning kid is likely to shoot a teacher, who is having a very bad day; because that teacher swung the bat at a student who gave her the finger!

(16,926 posts)1. Millcreek is the home district of Tom Ridge, the first Director of Homeland Security. Gotta' wonder how many bats he issued in his plans for protecting our citizens.
2. Tom was a Pennsylvania governor and was NOT supportive of the public school system (his own kids attended private schools).
So, what would Director Ridge suggest we do to protect our kids (or even his IF they were in a public school)?
Wonder if they get "color-coded" bats - depending on the level of threat?

No shit they are symbolic because they surely are not a realistic tool.
I don't know if he truly meant what he said and just missed the irony or whether he realizes that it is a dumb idea and is throwing shade on someone.

Give them lacrosse sticks. Then they have a club they can use to throw the rocks with.

(1,204 posts)kids who are in need. There is a lot of motivation among kids today to do something to stop this. In addition to the gun control movement, that motivation should be used to create programs that foster an inclusive community within the schools. Create programs to help these kids who feel a sense of desperation to find something to feel excited about. I know these exist to some extent, but we should be focusing on identifying the programs/systems that work well, and finding way to replicate those successes.
