Senate panel moves to take up bill protecting Mueller

Source: The Hill

BY JORDAIN CARNEY - 04/11/18 01:18 PM EDT

The Senate Judiciary Committee is moving forward with legislation to limit President Trump's ability to fire special counsel Robert Mueller.

Judiciary Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) wants to add the bill to the panel's business meeting agenda scheduled for Thursday, a spokesman for the senator confirmed to The Hill.

"In order to do that, the Minority would need to assent. Committee rules require such assent within 72 hours of a markup. Grassley has sought that assent, and is waiting to hear back," said spokesman George Hartmann. A spokesman for Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the committee, confirmed that Grassley and his staff have reached out about adding the legislation to Thursday's agenda.

Feinstein is reviewing the legislation and hasn't signed off on adding it to the agenda, the spokesman said.

However, they would clearly need 60 votes as someone will filibuster. However if we have all our caucus and 12 Republicans --- that will send a very strong message, in fact, if it is voted out of committee with significant Republican support, it should be sobering to Trump.

What should concern him is that it is people like Grassley and Cronyn ! who have spoken about this.

i think they may be trying to separate themselves from his taint. it would be nice to think it's because they actually give a shit about the rule of law, but i don't really see that in today's republicans.

anyway i hope it flies. Mueller must be allowed to complete the investigation, and Congress must impeach when he does.

This is a bill to protect Mueller from being fired by Trump. What are the odds the orange shit-gibbon signs it?

He's so bonkers, he'll probably veto it. Better have a veto-proof majority and the energy to vote to over-ride the veto.

Otherwise all this is a waste of time.

Assuming it gets out of committee, If Grassley doesn't get 60 senators to vote for it, Shitler wins.

it will send a sobering message.

But assume it does pass the House and Senate. That would mean 60 senators voted for it or no Senator was willing to filibuster and it passed the House. That puts him in impeachment territory if he then fires Mueller. Even if it has to happen in 2019. Impeachment only needs a simple majority in the House. Actually removing him would take more, but the impeachment proceeding themselves could move things in that direction.

He's such a narcissist, every appearance is about him and how he feels about himself and projecting what he thinks other people feel about him. Literally every appearance has this shape. He couldn't even have a fluffy Easter moment with out making it about himself and how he's so awesome to himself and projecting that everybody is in awe of his awesomness.

I struggle to see how a guy like that would get the hint. Even if the hint was delivered with a 10 ton weight dropping on him like a cartoon.

Others around him very uncomfortable. I would expect some to threaten to leave if he does something.

The main impact might be to the line of DOJ people who would be in line to fire Mueller. It could well make many refuse even knowing they would be fired.

Because that is personal to him. Cohen's been his bag man and chief fixer for a long time. Trump can't stroke his mighty (one inch) Trumpness without Cohen there cleaning up after his messes. Going after Cohen is like going after Trump himself, well as close as you can get to Trump without directly serving him papers.

His Administration is a total shit-show, we're not even into two years with this ass. I've never seen anything like this before.

It took Nixon years to blow up, W too. Both at least managed to get through the first two years fooling most Americans they were legitimately doing the job. Trump's acting like an angry old retiree tooling around the trailer park on a golf cart and yelling a squirrels.
