Vermont governor signs new gun restrictions into law

Source: The Hill

BY REID WILSON - 04/11/18 02:36 PM EDT

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) on Wednesday signed into law new restrictions on gun ownership, notching a big win for advocates of stricter controls in a state that has long held some of the most permissive rules in the nation.

The three measures Scott signed include new background check requirements, age restrictions on gun purchases and a ban on "bump stocks," modifications that make certain weapons fire at a faster rate.

They are the first new restrictions on gun laws in Vermont in years, and one of only a handful of new restrictions implemented in the wake of the Feb. 14 mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla.

Scott said he reevaluated his own views on guns after an incident closer to home. In February, police arrested an 18-year-old man for allegedly planning an attack on a high school in Fair Haven, Vt.

The speakers were mostly high school kids. Peter Welch, Burlington mayor Miro Weinberger , and Sanders all came and could be seen (separately praising the kids and the parents with them), but they intentionally did not speak -- it was the kids' rallies and it was very big considering the size of the state.

The Fair Haven incident caused many to rethink their positions on gun restrictions.

A few days ago I saw a protest by men who opposed any restrictions. Medium-sized town, about ten men with 2nd amendment rights signs. Honk if..... and there were lots and lots of honks.

We're not afraid to take on difficult issues (like our Civil Unions days) here in Vermont. Republican Gov. Phil Scott showed a lot of courage and leadership on this one.

Many people shook his hand and praised him for the action he spoke of taking. He responded that he wanted to keep people safe. After the mayor was sworn in for his third term, he gave the state of the city address. One of the first things he did was to thank the governor for the brave decision he made. Both when he was introduced and when the mayor spoke of the courage needed to make that decision, the REPUBLICAN governor got a standing ovation and a lot of applause in Burlington, a city where both the Democratic and Progressive party are bigger than the Republican party.
