Key House races to watch in 2018 01:54
Washington (CNN)House Speaker Paul Ryan's bombshell announcement that he will not seek re-election brings with it immediate and long-term political ramifications for his southeast Wisconsin district and the House landscape overall, where Democrats need to pick up 23 seats to gain the majority in 2019.
The most acute effect will be felt in Wisconsin's 1st Congressional District, which Ryan has represented since 1999. He already was facing a potential challenge from Democrat Randy Bryce, who had raised nearly $5 million for his campaign, including $2 million in the first quarter of 2018. The district, which includes Kenosha and Ryan's hometown of Janesville, is more favorable terrain for Democrats than the southwest Pennsylvania district Conor Lamb won in the March special election.
The Republican-aligned candidate in the recent Supreme Court race in Wisconsin won this district by five percentage points, despite losing the statewide race by more than 11 points.
.....................
Bryce's bid is likely to lose a little enthusiasm without Ryan's name on the ballot, but the energy this cycle is clearly on the Democratic side.......................................

(9,988 posts)Shes smart, has a good reputation in her community, and can speak intelligently to the issues. She has not benefitted from the same national exposure as Randy Bryce, but she has managed to keep her candidacy in the news anyway.

Shes won not one, but two, elections in Paul Ryans district and is betting on herself to unseat Wisconsins 1st district incumbent, Paul Ryan.
Cathy Myers, who may not have the best twitter handle in the race, will rely on her history of electoral success, community involvement, and focus on the issues as she navigates her campaign. Myers is running as a Democrat. Her debut campaign ad, published 6/21, is a riveting personal introduction, drawing a stark contrast between her, a member/contributor/activist of Wisconsins 1st district, and her opponent, Paul Ryan, an out of touch millionaire more worried about his wealthy donors.
She explains her personal background in the launch video:
My story starts at a truck stop in Iowa, Im the daughter of an Army veteran and an Army reserve nurse. My parents owned the truck stop and later added a diner. They worked tirelessly to give our family of 6 a middle class life
Each of us started at the truck stop, picking up trash, waiting tables, washing dishes, painting, you name it. Mom and Dad always insisted that we start from the ground floor and work our way up.
Myers with her family. She is the one with the glasses.
Background in Politics
Describing her political background, Myers tells the Progressive Army, I grew up in [a] political family, and we talked about politics at the dinner table every night. My father made his way from local city council to mayor to state house to house minority leader in Iowa. Myers explains that she embodies her fathers principled progressive values in her own political approach.
Myers on her Harley.
Given Myerss upbringing, it seems being politically active and involved in her community is just who she is. Beyond being a teacher of 23 years, Myers has also been elected union officer, President, and Vice President for the Hononegah Education Association. Thus, not only is Myers a union member/worker, she is a labor leader, having been elected into multiple positions..................................

(58,785 posts)When examined, and it is time for people outside WI who wonder, since he really could win, , I'm more impressed than I expected to be. He seems a sensible and acceptably intelligent man.
Bryce supported Sanders through the primary and then solidly supported our nominee, Hillary Clinton, like a good 90% of Sanders supporters. Bryce committed to fighting for Democrats against Republicans, as indicated by his own statements. And by his retweeting of a damning condemnation of "Bernie or Busters" published after we had our nominee in Forwardprogressives.com.

Also reassuring, there's nothing irrational or unicornish in Bryce's positions from 2016 til now. They're all mainstream liberal thoughts and goals.
Bryce has been politically active and has actually fun for a office himself a few times, so not a newcomer to politicking or his district's voters. He'll have a huge learning curve if he wins, of course, but how many don't? Very few have any real education and/or experience for this hugely complex and important job, but he brings with him full knowledge of what it is to be a working man.
So, with this great news of Ryan's one genuine public service, we just sent Bryce a little donation, and GO RANDY!
