During a conversation in his office on the day he told his colleagues he was retiring, Ryan reflected on his relationship with President Donald Trump, and noted he wished the president tweeted less, but said he has developed a good rapport with the commander-in-chief.

"It works better to have private conversations than public disputes," Ryan said.

I can think of two former Republican office holders in my own state who got big paying jobs after leaving office. If you screw the people you will be richly rewarded. Too bad it's not illegal.

After the 1962 failed Governor of California campaign:
In an impromptu concession speech the morning after the election, Nixon blamed the media for favoring his opponent, saying, "You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore because, gentlemen, this is my last press conference".

Ryan hoping that there will be such turmoil in the Trump-Republicon Party that he can ride to the rescue in 2020 as the Party's savior, or not contest 2020 in the hopes that a Democratic contender will win only to be weak in 2024 for Ryan's dreamed-of triumph.
