Gun owners urge Michigan court: Stop school gun restrictions

DETROIT (AP) — Lawyers for gun owners urged the Michigan Supreme Court on Wednesday to stop schools from banning the open carry of guns by visitors, a controversy that will test the ability of school boards to set their own safety policies.

The Ann Arbor and Clio districts have adopted sweeping anti-weapon policies, despite a state law that allows certain licensed gun owners to openly carry a pistol on public school property.

"School districts do not have the ability to make law," said Dean Greenblatt, an attorney representing a Clio-area man who would like to openly carry his gun when he visits his daughter's school.

Another lawyer, James Makowski, accused the state appeals court of "legislating from the bench" by allowing the Ann Arbor school board to carve out its own restrictions. He said local governments, including elected school boards, must defer to the Legislature on gun issues.

by some kind of spidey sense, I guess. Open carry advocates are one of the worst kind of gun advocates behind only assault weapon advocates on the evil scale.

. . . for the safety of the students, the board should just require that the school go on lockdown whenever someone with a gun arrives on campus.

With any justice the cops will respond to a 911 call about a man with a gun on campus and waste all the ammunition they have on them to teach this idiot a permanent lesson about the consequences of bad decisions.

when he's not representing such stellar parents..Let the clio-area
man show himself...let the world see the idiot that needs to carry
a gun at his daughters school.

Despite how some "evangelical" gun owners feel carrying a gun is akin to a religious experience.

By state law, I can legally open carry in the following places:

Schools or school property but may carry while in a vehicle on school property while dropping off or picking up if a parent or legal guardian

Public or private day care center, public or private child caring agency, or public or private child placing agency.

Sports arena or stadium

A tavern where the primary source of income is the sale of alcoholic liquor by the glass consumed on the premises

Any property or facility owned or operated by a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other place of worship.

An entertainment facility that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more

A hospital

A dormitory or classroom of a community college, college, or university

I cannot conceal carry in the above listed place even though I have a CPL. However, the CPL allows me to open carry. Not that I would ever want to.
