FBI Director Chris Wray on Friday formally announced that current acting deputy director David Bowdich will take on the role full time.
Bowdich was expected to take the post permanently. He replaces former deputy director Andrew McCabe, who was dismissed by Attorney General Jeff Sessions amidst some controversy last month. A former SWAT team member and sniper, Bowdich also led the FBIs response to the 2014 shooting in San Bernardino, Calif. that killed 14 people.
Paul Abbate, who had been running the branch that oversees the FBIs criminal and cyber investigations, will replace Bowdich as associate deputy director, a role that handles budget and personnel matters for the bureau.
David T. Resch, an assistant director of the Training Division at the FBIs training academy in Quantico, Va. will take over for Abbate.

WASHINGTON (AP) The FBI has announced a new leadership team that looks a lot like the old one.
President Donald Trump and Republicans have criticized the FBI as institutionally biased against their party and urged Director Christopher Wray to clean house. But the executives announced Friday are longtime FBI employees with vast experience in the bureaus highest echelons.
They include David Bowdich as deputy director, a role he has held in an acting capacity since Trump foe Andrew McCabe stepped down and was later fired. Bowdich had been the No. 3 in the FBI, overseeing personnel, budget and administrative issues. He also led the bureaus response to the 2015 mass shooting in San Bernardino, California. He has already been tested in his new position, acknowledging to members of Congress that the FBI bungled a potentially life-saving tip about the gunman in the Valentines Day massacre at a Florida high school.
FBI appointments and promotions are common in any administration and rarely garner much publicity. But Trumps attacks on the nations premier law enforcement agency have cast an intense spotlight on even routine machinations of the bureau.
