PHILADELPHIA (AP) Videos showing two black men handcuffed and removed from a Philadelphia Starbucks have drawn outrage and prompted police investigation.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports one clip posted Thursday on YouTube shows police talking to the men for several minutes before handcuffing them and escorting them out of the Center City establishment.
A second shorter clip shows a white man, who says he was meeting with the two, asking police what the men did wrong. He calls their arrest "ridiculous." A female voice is heard saying "they didn't do anything."
.....................................
The two men have since been released.

Neither the police, nor Starbucks has given an explanation as far as I can tell.

@Starbucks The police were called because these men hadnt ordered anything. They were waiting for a friend to show up, who did as they were taken out in handcuffs for doing nothing. All the other white ppl are wondering why its never happened to us when we do the same thing.

(21,650 posts)Starbucks should issue a statement - although I doubt they will. They probably don't want anything to "happen" to their Philadelphia locations.

(54,428 posts)NOBODY wanted anything to do with the police in those days because all they seemed to care about was beating up young people and stealing money. If there were any good cops there back then (and I'm sure there must have been some) they probably kept quiet so as not to be killed by accident by "friendly fire" during some fictitious "confrontation."
These cops deserve to be fired for false arrest and charged with assault. The Starbucks manager deserves to be fired with a big social network post explaining why, so she never gets another job (except maybe with the Philadelphia Police Department).
This mentality in Law Enforcement HAS to stop, and judging from the recently released tapes of thirty-plus local South Florida police departments threatening a man inquiring about a complaint form with arrest, it never will without a huge nationwide overhaul in how cops are trained and treated when caught being dirty.

(81,565 posts)Philadelphia Starbucks arrests: What a witness says happened
Lauren, who asked that her last name not be used, shot video of the two men being arrested at the Starbucks just before 5 p.m. on April 12. She said the incident began after the men asked to use the bathroom and were told that it was only available for paying customers, which Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross later confirmed.
After the men had been "quietly hanging out, chatting and waiting for their friend," she said officers entered the restaurant and asked the two men to leave, saying that they would be trespassing if they did not leave. ...
Lauren said another woman had entered the Starbucks minutes before the men were arrested and was given the bathroom code without having to buy anything and that another person in the restaurant at the time of the incident "announced that she had been sitting at Starbucks for the past couple of hours without buying anything."

(2,955 posts)I am at a loss for the way so many treat our fellow human. What breaks my heart is the acceptance these young men showed when they were handcuffed. Their mother's most likely taught them to not resist the POLICE. I never told my white (now 48 yr old) son to beware of the police, or whomever he met in his daily life. What is wrong with so many people that have so much hate in their hearts?
It makes me sick to think how the haters have a pass to marginalize who they see as "other".

(11,841 posts)Here in Ga, I have an atty friend who, over the past 3 yrs, has represented more than 100 people who were taken into custody for NO REASON and taken to the jail. About 1/2 were whites. And several, black & white, not poor at all. But it was late at night, so they MUST have been up to no good, you know!
All later released, but not after having many hours wasted, being in fear for their lives, and the embarrassment of being taken by cops out in public. And cell phone video has played a part in almost every case hes had.
The thing that SHOULD get even the old time "cops are always right" types, is that he's NEVER lost a case. And every one of them the city or county had to pay. Which means the TAXPAYERS had to pay. And in only 2 cases did the cops lose their jobs. Meanwhile, local govt officials are always on the news talking about the budget deficit and how to solve it.......

(19,095 posts)This type of stuff happens to Black men all the time. We live in a racist society where politicians, the news media, and police paint all young black men as dangerous and violent animals.
The fear has got to stop. There is no reason to be any more afraid of black men than anyone else. Youve got the 20% of society who are truly racist spending all their efforts to try to make the rest of the country terrified of black men. Unfortunately, the truly racist monsters are in the White House now.
The biggest offenders are the local news media in my town. They never fail to show or print the face of a criminal who is a minor if they are black, they almost never show the face of the kid accused of a crime if his name is white sounding. The message to the media consumer is clear, these young black faces are what you should be afraid of.

(1,204 posts)Never once had the police called on me. They tend to have ways of throwing dirty looks and repeatedly asking if they can get me anything.
I haven't read many details on how long they were there, but so far it sounds like they weren't there long (as in they didn't overstay their welcome) But even if they were in a busy location and refusing to free up seats for paying customers. Don't the police usually just trespass people and issue a citation when the owner of a property makes calls like this?

(14,175 posts)After all, it was one store, one manager, who over-reacted and called the police.
But how can the police say they need to make no apology? Especially when the third man came in and confirmed the meeting. At that point, could not the police turn to the manager and try and resolve the situation because of this development? Unless the men were belligerent and abusive to other guests.
Lokilooney
(322 posts)It was the store manager that called them and if someone does not leave a business at the cops request on behalf of said business they have to remove them. This is 100% on the Starbucks manager.

(38,322 posts)Our cops don't show up reliably for small stuff.
By the time our cops showed up (maybe because they wanted a coffee break) this situation would have resolved itself.
Lokilooney
(322 posts)It's a part of the job they are expected to do. The way this situation would have been resolved is if the manager of the property rescinded his request to have the men remove but he did not. When the cops relayed managements request and they did not comply then they were cuffed. Again and I'm trying to stress this, the police were doing the right thing in following the person who managed the property at the time's request. The manager was in the wrong for escalating the situation and not trying to resolve it.
On edit I pulled a quote from police Commissioner Richard Ross from CNN:
"They did a service that they were called to do," Ross said of the officers. "And if you think about it logically, that if a business calls and they say that someone is here that I no longer wish to be in my business, (officers) now have a legal obligation to carry out their duties. And they did just that."
hunter
(38,322 posts)And yeah, I do live in a place where calls like this don't even make it past the 911 operator; callers are instead emphatically reminded to dial the police department's community services desk directly, which is always a test of one's patience.
I'm frequently amazed there are places in the U.S.A. where the police are eager to pick up shoplifters at Wal-Mart, respond to non-injury car accidents, or investigate minor burglaries.
For any minor crap that happens in our city, our cops will ask if you'd like to make a report on their web page, or if you don't have internet access (maybe because your laptop was stolen...) in person at the police station. Visiting the police station is always an adventure.
I'm always careful about calling the cops anyways because they have guns and I don't think most cops have the temperament to use guns wisely in heated situations.
Lokilooney
(322 posts)The manager was full of shit and deserves to get any shit that's coming to them, but it is not the cops job to interpret this, it's there job to remove persons on behalf of property management/owners behalf. If you have a problem with this take it up with the management/owners. whether or not the police decide to respond is purely a local affair.

(160,594 posts)Commissioner Richard Ross said officers "did absolutely nothing wrong" and were professional in their conduct but "got the opposite back."
Apr.14.2018 / 9:07 PM ET / Updated 9:06 PM ET / Source: Associated Press
PHILADELPHIA Philadelphia's police commissioner on Saturday defended officers who arrested two black men at a Starbucks, prompting accusations of racism on social media, concern from the mayor and an apology from the company.
Videos posted online show officers handcuffing the men in the downtown establishment on Thursday. A white man in the video is heard saying he was meeting with the men and calls the arrest "ridiculous."
Commissioner Richard Ross said Starbucks employees called 911 to say the men were trespassing. He said officers were told that the men had come in and asked to use the restroom but were denied because they hadn't bought anything, as he said is company policy. He said they then refused to leave.
Ross, who is black, said police asked the men to leave three times but they refused, and they were then arrested but were later released after the company elected not to prosecute. He said the officers "did absolutely nothing wrong" and were professional in their conduct toward the individuals but "got the opposite back." He did not mention the person who said he was meeting with the men.

(89,260 posts)yes there is a huge problem with racist cops.
but there are also the idiots who are always calling cops if they see black men or other minorities but usually black men in places they feel they don't belong. and if they were anything other than black men they most likely would not be called.

(25,590 posts)for a future robbery? Were homeless and going to take a giant poo in the restroom? What's the time limit for being a black man in Starbucks without buying something? Five minutes? Ten? The idiots who called the police are to blame, as you say.

(8,311 posts)Sadly, I've had to call law enforcement fairly recently, to protect my neighbor.
We got closer as neighbors near the holidays (besides just waving when we saw each other) when his security camera caught the guy who hit my parked car. A couple of weeks later, I heard shouting and saw they were in the front yard through my window, on a Sunday morning. I came out, could tell it wasn't my neighbor being the loud one and just yelled over "Is there a problem? Do I *need* to call the law?" The other guy got in his car and drove off. Neighbor walked over and he thanked me, was an ex he'd left because of abuse.
Last Saturday morning, I was sitting on my back porch and didn't just hear shouting, but screaming. I went out front. Same car was there, the screaming was coming from the open front door.
I immediately called 911, said my neighbor's abusive ex's car was there and screaming was coming from the house. Told them my neighbor's name. Said the visiting car was associated with the only other time there'd ever been trouble, and that the neighbor said the owner of the car had been abusive before.
The homeowner had gotten off one 911 call but had to drop the phone so all that operator was hearing was an altercation. Me being not only a "watchful" but caring neighbor by learning about them gave them enough information to identify the likely aggressor vs hurting the wrong person, and my neighbor thanked me again. He was pretty beat up when he thanked me, but by his ex, not the cops.
It sounded like someone was getting killed and all I could see was the person who had beat him up before was there. I didn't call ON him. I *was* scared to have to call violent thugs to deal with a violent thug and not hurt my neighbor. I tried to call FOR him.
Edit to add: Essentially, get to know your neighbors. Don't call in noise complaints you can resolve by knocking on a door. Save it for when your neighbor actually needs them to prevent harm, and then pray like hell that they understand and do the right thing.)

(JTA) The two black men arrested at a Starbucks in Philadelphia were waiting for a local Jewish businessman, Andrew Yaffe.
. . .
The men were taken to a police station, where they were fingerprinted and photographed, their attorney Lauren Wimmer told The Washington Post on Saturday. They were released several hours later due to lack of evidence.
Yaffe, who runs a real estate development firm, was meeting the men to discuss business investment opportunities. In the video, he arrives at the Starbucks and tells police that they were waiting for him.
Why would they be asked to leave? Yaffe says on the video. Does anybody else think this is ridiculous? Its absolute discrimination.
