Central U.S. Storm Kills 3 In Blast Of Snow, Ice And Wind

Source: Talking Points Memo/AP

By STEVE KARNOWSKI | April 14, 2018 4:27 pm

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A storm system stretching from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes buffeted the central U.S. with heavy winds, rain, hail and snow, forcing flight cancellations, creating treacherous road conditions and killing at least three people, including a sleeping 2-year-old Louisiana girl.

In the Upper Midwest, the early spring storm brought snow to a region pining for sunshine and warmth. More than 200 flights were canceled Saturday at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and blizzard conditions forced the airport in South Dakota’s biggest city, Sioux Falls, to remain closed for a second straight day.

The Minnesota Twins home game against the Chicago White Sox at Target Field was also snowed out Saturday, marking the first back-to-back postponements of baseball games in the stadium’s nine seasons. The Yankees and Tigers were rained out Saturday in Detroit.

Authorities closed several highways in southwestern Minnesota, where no travel was advised, and driving conditions were difficult across the entire southern half of the state. The National Weather Service predicted that a large swath of southern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, would get 9 to 15 inches (23 to 38 centimeters) of snow by the time the storm blows through on Sunday, though only a few inches had fallen on the area as of midday Saturday.

extremes in conditions (temps, precip., etc) is the new norm. I guess "No Norm" is the "new norm".

suburban late Friday afternoon (it is a total loss as it rolled 2 times) She is ok--shook up as is her husband who was with her. It stated snowing, sleeting, etc etc. She was just coming home from work--very slippery roads.

Anyway, here in WI--yes, snow still coming down. Lot of accidents. I stayed off the road today--kept thinking of my sister. Could have lost her.

I decided to get some exercise and walk to the grocery store for a few small things, mostly SUV's on the road with some cars getting stuck on the lesser used streets. I suppose it's good timing though to hit on a weekend.

About a foot and a half of snow on the level where protected. 3 and 4 foot drifts in places. Solid ice underneath. It’s gonna be a mess when it melts.
