Trump puts the brakes on new Russian sanctions, reversing Haley's announcement

Source: Washington Post

President Trump on Monday put the brakes on a preliminary plan to impose additional economic sanctions on Russia, walking back a Sunday announcement by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley that the Kremlin had swiftly denounced as “international economic raiding.”

Preparations to punish Russia anew for its support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government over the alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria caused consternation at the White House. Haley said on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” that sanctions on Russian companies behind the equipment related to Assad’s alleged chemical weapons attack would be announced Monday by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

But as officials in Moscow condemned the planned sanctions as overly punitive, Trump conferred with his national security advisers later Sunday and told them he was upset the sanctions were being officially rolled out because he was not yet comfortable executing them, according to several people familiar with the plan.

Administration officials said the economic sanctions were under serious consideration, along with other measures that could be taken against Russia, but said Trump had not given final authorization to implement them. Administration officials said Monday it was unlikely Trump would approve any additional sanctions without another triggering event by Russia, describing the strategy as being in a holding pattern.

Evangelicals would explain away the moral contradictions against their "values".

TrumpLickers would say they don't care because the Wall.

Progressives would say perverts can watch consenting adult acts if nobody is injured.

But many (most?) Americans would say that it would prove the Steele dossier and be indicative of a lot of blackmail and skulduggery.

Putin and his buddies have probably supported Trump’s lavish lifestyle for years, but Putin does not seem the type to not document every transaction. Domstic and international money laundering is illegal, and Putin can treaten to supply proof against Trump or his kids to U.S. intelligence. Or he might be threatening to stop funding the Trump family lifestyle. Trump’s businesses are not doing so well (as in Panama), although he has been making millions from donors and taxpayers. The Kushner family also lives on borrowed money. It probably wouldn’t take a lot for their financial house of cards to collapse.

Vlad is already PISSED. The sanctions were supposed to be lifted by now and everybody making tons of dirty money.

That's why Putin hooked up with this fool in the first place. I'd be nervous if I were you donald!

Have another bucket of KFC, maybe that'll help settle your nerves! Wash it down with two scoops...

After delaying for over a year imposing sanctions that the House and Senate overwhelmingly supported, Trump made a half-baked response. Then he recently imposed sanctions on some oligarchs after they had a year to hide their assets. Have the sanctions that he did eventually impose even rise to the level of what Congress was asking for? And how about these sanctions that Haley was talking about. Are these things that would have been imposed a year ago if Trump did what Congress wanted?
