Poll finds Republican tax cut remains unpopular

Source: Wall Stree Journal via Marketwatch

More people view the Republican tax overhaul as a bad idea than a good one, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll has found, but Americans see the GOP as better equipped than Democrats to handle taxes, trade and other economic issues.

The result is a mixed bag for the Republican Party, which has been hoping to battle political headwinds in the midterm elections by promoting the tax cut that Congress approved four months ago and by celebrating improvements in the economy. The poll also found that Americans see the Democratic Party as better able than the GOP to handle other prominent policy issues, including sexual harassment, health care and gun violence.

As the midterm campaign heats up, Republicans have aimed to make a central campaign issue of the tax cut, which passed with no Democratic support and was signed by President Donald Trump in December.

Ever since its enactment, the tax plan has been more unpopular than popular, Journal/NBC News polls found. Republicans hoped that would change after the law began to take effect, as more money showed up in paychecks and Republicans did more to explain the benefits. The new poll found that 27% of respondents thought the law was a good idea, while 36% thought it was a bad idea. Opinion split largely along party lines, but even among Republicans support was far from unanimous: 56% of Republicans thought the law was a good idea.

And deficit reduction. Their tax bill does the reverse of that and it does it on steroids.
The phrase cognitive dissonance comes to mind.

That would require a balanced budget AFTER giving Corporations and the RICH their tax break of a lifetime. Gosh...now just HOW could that happen? Simple....GUT,roll back, repeal, shit can ANY and all programs that would help anyone not in their tax bracket.

Luckily it failed by a good margin in the House.

In light of their continual attacks on President Obama on budgets. They can’t run from an almost decade of propaganda.
I believe our party’s strategy of repealing and replacing the tax bill will work well during the midterm elections and also when we get back Congress. So here’s to a blue tsunami this fall!

to make it popular. I just got a 8" x 10" flyer from Jason Lewis (MN-02) touting the tax bill. According to his numbers, the "average" family of 4 will receive a tax cut of $3154. The front of the flyer was a check made out to me for $3154.00. Except on the front, they say that the $3154 figure is the average wage increase according to the House Ways and Means Committee.

Americans see the GOP as better equipped than Democrats to handle taxes, trade and other economic issues.

I read an article a few weeks ago about farmers concern over the trade tariffs. One said he probably wouldn't vote for Trump again, but he wouldn't commit to vote for a dem, either. The author of the article stated that dems are good at policy but terrible at politics & I thought, "Damn! He hit the nail on the head with that observation."

There is a huge segment of republicans who would rather not vote than vote for a democrat. This is what the dems are up against, & dem leadership seems to be completely oblivious to it. For 35+ years, rural America has been brainwashed by the likes of Limbaugh & Fox to think it's the dems fault that things aren't as rosy as they used to be, because the libtards gave all the nice things to the uppity women, minorities, & gays.

The dems have dropped the ball on marketing. I wish dem leadership would have read George Lakoff's book, "Moral Politics" back when it came out. Lakoff asserts that people are emotionally attached to their political views. It's not good enough to say, "Hey, our policies will be better for you. Here's our platform page–check it out." You have to appeal to them emotionally, too. The repubs know this & come up with slogans like No Child Left Behind. Clean Skies, Healthy Forests. They don't care that they aren't truthful, the slogans appeal to people. What do the dems have? A Better Deal.

An example: The GOP frequently call the dems "tax & spend dems." Why don't the dems ever counter with "tax cut & spend republicans?" That phrase should be as common as the tax & spend phrase, by now, but it isn't.

The dems better sharpen their marketing game, cuz with all the shenanigans in our electoral process, they are going to need bigger & bigger turnout & margins, to beat the rigged system.

Its a common problem around the world even. Conservatives have managed to foment the myth of being the better managers of the economy. Even though the stats do not support them. Right wing administrations also have more convictions of financial fraud, and other ethical crimes.

Its frustrating. It doesn't matter with evidence right in front of their eyes. Clinton's economy blossomed with a surplus. Dubya almost immediately spent it all and sent the country into a depression as he left. He also raised the debt to record levels, and government spending was also record levels. Obama digs us out, and Trump and the GOP have passed a tax scam bill that will cost billions more than they can take in. Their double sided sword of course is used to then cut social spending to make it up, theoretically at least.

The MSM is also to blame. They love to follow narratives, stereotypes. Its lazy but it also reaffirms peoples beliefs. The Democrats just seem to lack any kind of marketing PR strategy whatsoever. You'd think with all their connections to the entertainment industry they'd be able to have the best minds working on that aspect of their party's communication.

dems need to get out the fact that cons are bad for the economy
supply side is crap
tax cut do not increase tax revenue
tax cuts for the rich do not create jobs
republican policies caused all the economic crashes
Why can't dems hammer these points
