BREAKING: Trump says U.S. and North Korea have had direct talks at ‘very high levels’.

This story will be updated.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — President Trump said Tuesday that he has given “my blessing” to planned discussions between South Korea and North Korea about bringing a formal end to the Korean War and suggested that five locations are under review for his planned summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“North Korea is coming along. South Korea is meeting and has plans to meet to see if they can end the war, and they have my blessing on that,” Trump said about word that the two Koreas would discuss a formal end to the war later this month.

Greeting visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at his Mar-a-Lago resort here, Trump took some credit for the rapid developments related to North Korea.

“They’ve been very generous that without us, and without me in particular, I guess, they wouldn’t be discussing anything and the Olympics would have been a failure,” Trump said of South Korea and the Winter Olympics held there in February.

Colbert made a great comment: "Kim Jong-Un wanted to meet with the leader of the US. Putin was busy so they're sending Trump."

If anything, North and South Korean officials are like "Oh Fuck Oh Fuck Oh Fuck this guy is probably going to get us all killed for real!" and they don't have confidence in someone who had the impulse control of a toddler... with nukes. The thing to remember about the two Koreas is "Statecraft is stagecraft." The Kim Jong XX's have no desire to lose power in their nation and the South Koreans are rather found of not living in smoking piles of rubble. Neither side is terribly interested in open warfare, because both know it would be disastrous for both. South Korea would rebuild with global aid and North Korea knows it would end as a state, subsumed by either South Korea in forced reunification or by China as a protectorate territory.

But Trump unbalances everything. And the Koreans are more afraid of an angry, unhinged orange than they are of each other.
