IRS to delay tax deadline by one day after agency's Tax Day technology collapse

Source: Washington Post

The Internal Revenue Service will let taxpayers submit tax returns without penalty through the end of Wednesday, extending the deadline a day after the agency’s systems for electronically filing returns were offline for most of the day Tuesday.

The agency’s electronic filing system came back online early Tuesday evening. But before that, the agency’s onle channels for direct tax payments, electronic filings and submissions filed via widely used tax preparation services such as TurboTax and H&R Block were not going through.

Approximately 5 million people were expected to file Tuesday before the original midnight deadline.

Several senior government officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the agency’s outdated technology failed amid the crush of last-minute filers.

BREAKING: The Internal Revenue Service will let taxpayers submit their tax returns without penalty through the end of the day Wednesday, delaying the deadline a day after widespread failures of the agencys systems for electronically filing returns. The agencys electronic filing system came back online early Tuesday evening, but for much of the day, the agencys online channels for direct tax payments, electronic filings and submissions filed via TurboTax and H&R Block were all not working. This story will be updated.

The Internal Revenue Services online system for submitting tax returns experienced widespread failures on Tuesday, complicating filing for the millions of taxpayers attempting to meet the governments midnight deadline.

On my way over here this morning, I was told a number of systems are down at the moment, IRS Acting Commissioner David J. Kautter told lawmakers at an oversight hearing Tuesday. We are working to resolve the issue and taxpayers should continue to file as they normally would.

Kautter said the agency was struggling to accept returns from the widely used tax software program TurboTax and the massive tax preparation company H&R Block. Taxpayers can use the services to complete their filings, but the filings are not being transmitted from the companies to the IRS, Kautter said.

They changed the deadline from April 15th due to Boston's Patriot Day. I believe it happened due to the bombing then became permanent but I am not sure. Does the fucking moron still need his EXTENSION? I am sure Mueller has all the info he needs already.

There is now a separate holiday in D.C. - Emancipation Day, I think I remember? That delayed the due date for everyone.

Twitter was down sporadically yesterday.

Would not be implausible that all this recent hacking could wind up in taking the internet down.
As in bloodless coup....or worse, there will be blood.

But here, they were salient.

Now, those who defended the overload are sometimes on the offensive over the same kind of problem arising for the same reason, without showing the least bit of awareness that they're flattering their foes by emulating them.

You know, nobody cared. No repercussions. Nary a comment.

On the other hand, I was due a refund in all circumstances. Even when there was a problem, it merely reduced by refund by a token amount.

It pays to point out that delivery time from a given city varies by a day or two, and norms aren't a precise predictor of reality; it also is worth noting that often the postmark is blurred and hard to read. Do we really think they have a large staff doing nothing but scrutinizing postmarks to ensure that they weren't postmarked a day or two late? Apparently, many do.

I've seldom found that assuming intolerance and zero-tolerance is correct. Even with a hide-bound bureaucracy like the IRS. (Now, the EPA ... Just don't get me started.)
