A statue of a South Carolina native known as "the father of gynecology" was removed from Central Park in New York on Tuesday.
The legacy of Dr. J. Marion Sims a 19th-century gynecologist who experimented on enslaved women is so controversial that his monument was the only one of more than 800 under review that was removed from its current location in New York, npr.org reported.
In the Antebellum era, Sims performed surgical experiments on slaves without using anesthesia, according to newyork.cbslocal.com. These experiments led to a breakthrough technique that fixed vesicovaginal fistula, or tears between the vagina and bladder.
Statues of Sims remain standing elsewhere in the country: In addition to one in Montgomery, Ala., where he performed much of his medical work, there is a monument to Sims in Columbia.

I remember studying him in classes long time ago--that was a LONG time ago.
A worker tosses a strap over the 19th century statue of Dr. J. Marion Sims, Tuesday, April 17, 2018, in New York's Central Park. Sims was known as the father of modern gynecology, but critics say his use of enslaved African-American women as experimental subjects was unethical. The statue is being moved to Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, where Sims is buried. Mark Lennihan AP

(129,000 posts)The memorials that promoted and celebrated the U.S. holocaust are finally being removed.
The first thing that Germany did after WW2 was remove all manner of Hitler celebration and placed his role in proper perspective. This needs to happen here.

(18,124 posts)happen here. Too many 21st century Confederate grey, wanna be slave holders. 66millions plus at last count and growing. Lucky there is still plenty blue to oppose the rise of this new Confederacy. Yet the southern racist white person, part of the 66million+ trumpthePOSpotus voters are still fighting the 1st ameriKKKan Civil War and look like, with the election of trumpthepretendpotus, they are jockeying for a 2nd ameriKKKan Civil War.

(18,124 posts)been gone. That they are still wanted in places they can be seen and revered is the point. Let's see experimentation, 1850's on, most statues still up 2018. Racism associated with the way dr.sims thought and experimented, not removed and growing still.

(129,000 posts)Statues are actually coming down - many that had been erected around 1912/1913.
So although generations have internalized a love of the KKK, at least some of the monuments glorifying them are coming down finally.

as to what FSogol wrote. Racism only lasts as long as people desire to think that way and actively fight to maintain it and/or are QUIET about it in a desire to maintain racial privilege and entitlement. Charleston white racist riots, constant and continuous shootings of unarmed AA's, mass shooting in a AA church, shootings that have showed me just how strong a hold racism has gained since just say the installation of the bush-cheney regime.
Many people can afford the patience you and FSsogol display at the removal of the monument(s) that reveres a vicious racist.
Many don't have that benefit, privilege or entitlement. they(AA)predominantly, are being murdered, executed, literally, wanting equality, but ain't here yet for many many americans. I better add this caveat: I used they because I have never let anyone openly discriminate or try to humiliate me because of my families of origin. African, German, Spanish. Or my pigment hue. I changed they to AA. Oversight in trying to remain objective. Journalism, Broadcasting and Film, 5 year study at a prestigious American University. Must declare my intent. Sorry.

(129,000 posts)I don't have the patience either.
But sometimes, like the election of Barack Obama (thanks to 40% of white voters) or the removal of Confederate statues after 100+ years, gives me a tiny bit of hope.

(18,124 posts)I guess...the election of President Obama gave me a thrill, one because of the race neutrality a lot of white people showed in 08. Gratifying to me...this lasted until the vacation plans of the family were released prior to event by MSM media people and social media outlets, Malia and Sasha were both put as immediate risk. A precedent setting incident, in my following, since 63, of Presidential daily affairs and family togetherness.
And the unprecedented obstruction of ANY Obama Initiative starting in 2010 based solely on his skin color, no doubt in my mind, told me not to count on too much coming from those who handled, politically, daily american life and the laws and programs created and enforced in an orderly society. That personal observation has been borne out and proven without doubt. Today April 2018.
I'd like to see a lot more and less general I guess.

(129,000 posts)(my Mom, who passed several years ago, loved that last pic and always used to point out that little boy, who is now a young man, and who attended the signing of the ACA - she chuckled at how he was dressed the same as the President)
Doesn't mean their lives won't be made miserable because the systemic and institutionalized racism is alive and well and being stoked by the current occupant of the WH, but this sort of thing has left lasting impressions on these young people - and notably, young black boys who will be men one day (hopefully...if they survive profiling).

(18,124 posts)his goddamn statue belongs in a cemetery in pieces like his rotted corpse. I would believe he was an early Mengele, hell Mengele probably learned about him while studying..... He is the perpetrator of one of the modern histories 7 most evil medical experiments, ever.
