Republicans refuse to back opioids bill sponsored by vulnerable Dem

Source: The Hill

BY PETER SULLIVAN - 04/18/18 06:00 AM EDT

Republicans are declining to back Democratic measures that would crack down on suspicious opioid shipments — including legislation offered by Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), one of the most vulnerable members up for reelection this year.

McCaskill said she has approached multiple Republicans about backing her bill, and all have refused.

“I have tried to get Republican co-sponsors and for the life of me I can’t figure out why everyone’s afraid of this bill,” said McCaskill, who is running for reelection in a state President Trump won by 18 points in 2016.

McCaskill’s bill would repeal a 2016 law that a Washington Post–“60 Minutes” investigation last fall found is impeding the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) ability to freeze suspicious opioid shipments, flooding pharmacies in small towns with pills and fueling the opioid crisis.

The rethugs don’t give a $hit about solving the problems in this country or the people, it’s all about politics and getting re election toon funds from big money donors. I hope more American people wake up to this fact. Because everyday their actions speak for themselves.

it's beyond ridiculous already.

Whats creating the overdose deaths in large part is people being kicked of regulated prescription drugs and switching to street alternatives.

obviously opiod addiction is something to be discouraged but it is the increasingly draconian laws that are killing people not the drugs themselves. It is the switch to the street level drugs that is getting people killed at a much higher rate than previously.

Do explain to me how taking away more of the controlled opiods will prevent that.

Increases are greatest for overdoses related to the category including illicitly manufactured fentanyl (ie, synthetic opioids excluding methadone), which more than doubled, accounting for more than 20 000 overdose deaths in 2016 vs less than 10 000 deaths in 2015. This difference is enough to account for nearly all the increase in drug overdose deaths from 2015 to 2016
