Ex-Playboy Model, Freed From Contract, Can Discuss Alleged Trump Affair

The tabloid news company American Media Inc. agreed to let a former Playboy model out of a contract that had kept her from talking freely about an alleged affair with Donald J. Trump, her lawyer said.
The settlement agreement, reached Wednesday, ends a lawsuit brought by the model, Karen McDougal, and protects the president from being drawn into a legal case involving efforts to buy the silence of women who had stories to tell about him during the 2016 campaign.
He still faces another lawsuit, from the pornographic film star Stephanie Clifford, who is suing to get out of a deal that Mr. Trumps personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, arranged in 2016 for her silence about an alleged affair.
In August 2016 American Media, which owns The National Enquirer, acquired the rights to Ms. McDougals story about Mr. Trump which it never ran in return for $150,000 and commitments to use its magazines to promote her current career as a fitness specialist.

(52,227 posts)they paid money to kill the story at a time when the story was not worth so much and it would have killed access to many stories about donnie, which collectively were worth more to them at the time.
the situation's completely different now. they have no special access to donnie to get stories about him the way they did when he was just a real estate mogul and game show host, and the mcdougal story is way more valuable now that he's president.
there may well be some personal/political stuff going on, but the economics alone can explain this one.
in terms of political impact, though, i kinda doubt she'll do anything more than fill in a few details that don't really matter.
it'll sell a lot of papers, though.

(7,398 posts)I am no expert, but the McDougall case has always seemed just a bit vague in some way.......although I am no way a legal expert. Might be an attempt to tie the two cases together in public perception.

(6,212 posts)it was pretty hum-drum boring. All she did was praise trump hoping to get some kind of great job. She didn't come off having credibility. I think everyone has lost interest in her.

"where federal investigators obtained email communications, audio recordings and other documentation from Mr. Cohen"
"Those materials included information about American Media and the McDougal suit, people involved in the case said."
More "grist for the mill" ..which is good, imo.
