John Kasich's political allies are reaching out to GOP megadonors, seeing if theyd back him
Source: CNBC
Close allies of John Kasich have reached out to prominent GOP donors to gauge their interest in backing the Republican Ohio governor against President Donald Trump in a possible 2020 showdown, CNBC has learned.
Kasich has not decided whether he will run for president in 2020, but Republican megadonors have indicated to his top political lieutenants that they are willing to back him over Trump under certain circumstances, sources with direct knowledge of the matter told CNBC under the condition of anonymity.
In private discussions with Kasich's top political lieutenants, GOP megadonors have said they would support a Kasich presidential campaign depending on whether Republicans can hold congressional majorities this fall and how close federal investigations get to Trump, the sources said.

(21,636 posts)It's no secret the GOP is already looking for alternatives.
Their only fear is that Cheeto himself will run as an independent ("Freedom Party"?) just to spite them - otherwise they would have probably already shot him from a school book depository themselves.

There were also - also in the 19th century - four "accidental presidents" - Vice Presidents who became president solely due to the elected president's death - who were denied nomination for a term in their own right - John Tyler in 1844; Millard Fillmore in 1852; Andrew Johnson in 1868; and Chester Arthur in 1884. Kasich is probably really hoping that Trump abandons running for re-election himself (like LBJ in 1968).

There're also the religious and white male bigoted attitudes revealed in really cluelessly stupid comments. The contempt for many millions reveals in itself that he lacks the stuff to be even an adequate president of an extremely diverse nation.
And all the ethical and corruption issues, although those don't seem to matter much these days. Grading on a Republican curve, I'm guessing they'd probably see him a C at worst? Damned good compared to all those eFFers?
But how about plain old ability to govern? The smartest thing I think I've seen Kasich do is posture as a moderate alternative. Dissociating from the reality that strong conservatives prove themselves every time without fail unable to govern even adequately, and normally disastrously.
This is reminding me of his and Cruz's abortive agreement to stop Trump by ceding states to each other, a "cooperation" that collapsed in quarreling accusations the first day.
