WASHINGTON (AP) Americans overwhelmingly believe teachers dont make enough money, and half say theyd support paying higher taxes to give educators a raise.
The findings of the new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research come amid recent teacher strikes and other protests over low pay, tough classroom conditions and the amount of money allocated to public schools in several Republican-led states.
Tens of thousands of Arizona teachers voted last week to strike after rejecting an offer of a 20-percent raise, because it didnt include a vow from state lawmakers not to further cut taxes before providing more money for the states schools.
To educate children and barely get a living is obnoxious, said Elaine Penman, a company manager in Tucson, Arizona, who added she and others went outside to cheer on protesting teachers who were marching by. Shes among the 50 percent of Americans who say theyd pay a higher tax bill if it meant more money for teachers.

(12,265 posts)They are getting ready to circulate a petition endorsed by Tom Coburn, that would take away the raise the teachers fought for.

(51,627 posts)from being properly funded. It was passed in the 1070s and has been down hill ever since. Student money from the state ranks CA as 47th (it had been 49th for years). Meanwhile teachers can't afford to live in certain areas in CA due to the extremely high cost of living. 50% of staffs were cut, classes like art, music PE were cut, and none of it ever came back. It is all about prop taxes and Prop 13!
