Jewish man attacked in Crown Heights walking home from Shabbat services
Source: TimesofIsrael
An identifiably Jewish man was beaten and choked while walking home from Shabbat services in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.
It was the second such attack in two weeks. Footage of the incident was made available on Monday.
The Jewish man, Menachem Moskowitz, was walking home from prayer services at about 1:30 on Saturday afternoon. He told the CrownHeights.info news website that he said good afternoon to a man who was smoking a cigar on a street corner.
As soon as [I greeted] him he began yelling at me you fake Jews, who are you saying hello to? Youre fake Jews and you stole all my money and robbed me, and stole my mortgage and my house. I want to kill you! the news website quoted him as saying.

The video removes any doubts of intent. Terrible. Thank goodness for the good samaritans.

(3,051 posts)An Israeli-Arab man borrowed a yarmulke from a Jewish friend to try to prove to his friend that it was safe to walk in a nice neighborhood in Berlin as openly Jewish. Well, the Jewish friend was correct.
The Arab man was promptly attacked by a Syrian immigrant.
This brave Arab filmed the attack for the world to see.

(37,648 posts)OMG. America is inching closer toward being Germany in the 1930s. Trump has brought this out in people, making them angry and filled with hatred, with negativity, scapegoating certain groups for their problems.
MosheFeingold
(3,051 posts)But odds of the attacker being a Trump supporter are close to nil.
I lived in Crown Heights. I have zero doubt from the film (and the unique beard) we have yet another "Black Hebrew Israelite" (a weird cult) attack on Jews.

(3,247 posts)I also think this trend of blaming literally every bad event on Trump needs to stop. It makes us sound like raving maniacs. Trump is definitely not a good influence on the country, but he's hardly the source of all evil in America today. If we keep this up, it'll wind up being mocked just like "Thanks Obama!" was, and rightly so.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)that my post was stating the attacker was a Trumper. I did not say or even imply it.
What I did say, and what IS true, is that Trump has brought out the hatred, violence, and scapegoating to the forefront in the country, making it more acceptable. (This is what Hitler's regime did in 1930s Germany...scapegoating the Jews for their economic woes.)
It's settled that the tone of the country takes its cue from the top. Companies are that way, too. However the head of the company is, it trickles down. (Unlike that trickle down money theory.)
But Trump would appreciate the posts sticking up for him.

(3,247 posts)My post had nothing to do with defending Trump and everything to do with trying to avoid the sort of "Thanks Obama!" idiocy the right engaged in for eight years. You know, how they blamed every bad event on him, no matter how absurd it was?
That kind of thing is happening now with Trump. He's awful, there's no arguing that, but he's simply not responsible for every bad thing that happens in America. And your post did imply it, at least to my reading.
If we fall into the trap of blaming Trump for events he's not involved in, it'll make it that much easier for the right to dismiss every criticism of him as Trump Derangement Syndrome.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)Although I can see how you thought that was what I meant. I said that Trump has brought out all the hatred, negativity, and such to the forefront in the country.
More violence, more hatred. They don't have to be Trump supporters. Many people are apolitical, but they pick up on the tone of things & that some things are more acceptable now.

(100,102 posts)He's not directly responsible but is a catalyst for the rise in hate in this country. Although most of this can be tied to Putin and his manipulation of social media. Just look at the parallels between us and the other countries that Putin has hit. Look at England, France, Italy, the Philippines, Turkey, Japan, and all the other countries affected by Putin's troll army. This is not normal, and it's all connected. Sure, you can't pinpoint this one crime on Trump. But you can say that this particular individual has had some influence from the troll army that is affecting our networks, right?
MosheFeingold
(3,051 posts)It has zero to do with Trump. Attacks in Crown Heights are very rarely done by whites.
Despite our common cause, antisemitism in America is most commonly held by: (1) Muslims and (2) African-Americans.
Yes, I am happy to supply any number of endless surveys and studies on this.
But, perhaps more importantly, as an Orthodox man who lived in Crown Heights, I can just personally tell you that a random crazy guy in Crown Heights who claims a Jewish man is not a "real Jew" is either part of the Black Hebrew Israelite group or somehow influenced by them, as they have random crazy guys screaming this exact slur at many a street corner and holding up signs outside the shul since I can remember.
The SPLC considers them a "black supremacist" group. Here:

(100,102 posts)I know I can't do it just by reading articles and watching investigative TV shows. I do know there is definitely more research that needs to be done in this area, especially with everything that is going on now. To me it's unfathomable that we have Nazis marching in our streets and a meteoric rise in hate crimes. I know that Trump and Putin have escalated a lot of it, but it really has been going on for that long?

(3,051 posts)Go read about the Crown Heights Pogrom at the link.
My brother-in-laws front door was kicked in. He turned armed men away with a shotgun.
Again, this was 1991. Hundreds of violent rioters. Many dead or hurt, including an Italian guy who the crowd decided "looked Jewish."
The only thing that has changed is the news finds it convenient to report now.

(3,051 posts)He said it best.
I don't like to cry wolf. It sucks up the air from real attacks.
I also don't like false accusations (even against bad people) used to give cover to the culprits.
Any observant Jewish person in NYC can tell you about the crazies that are behind this. They are a real problem, day to day, and have been for decades.
I personally want to see the correct persons brought to justice, and not get aways with it bc knee-jerkers scream "Trump!".

(3,051 posts)I strongly doubt this was a Trump supporter.
Those claiming Jewish people are "fake Jews" are usually black and somehow associated with a local group known as "Black Hebrew Israelites". This group believes Jewish people are not Jewish, and they are and are often very violent towards Jewish people.
This is the second Shabbos-related attack in as many weeks.
Last week, two Jewish men were brutally assaulted by a group of five black men and women while walking on Eastern Parkway on Friday night. Police are investigating the attack as possibly being motivated by bias.
http://crownheights.info/crime/612238/two-jewish-men-brutally-assaulted-friday-night/
For those with long memories, we actually suffered a pogrom in 1991 where a group of over 400 people tore through the neighborhood, attacking every Jewish person they found, and destroying shops and homes owned by Jewish people

Note, this was 1991. In the United States of America.

(16,189 posts)These days, I have almost as much disgust for the Russian mob. Was this man targeted for being Jewish, or could it have been yet another brutal message from the Russian mob? Maybe he got in the way, or knew something. The Russian mob keeps bumping people off, or intimidating them, before they can talk too much.
MosheFeingold
(3,051 posts)Was obviously a man of little material wealth. He was not a mob target,
Chabad has zero to do with the Russian mob. I have attended many a Chabad shul in this world. The article was pretty inaccurate in how it describes Chabad. I'd start with its website. The Rebbe was a great man, but I don't know anyone who considered him the mosiach just for example. So I tend to discount much of the remainder, including the bits about souring and the mob.
Now this does not mean some random member of Chabad is mobbed up. It's a large, worldwide, organization that accepts all Jews who desire to follow G-d (and sincere gentiles for that matter). There are sure to be some clunkers in the mix.

(16,189 posts)The article about Jared and the connections to people like Felix Sater was unnerving, and then to see the topic arise in the movie Mollys Game just two nights ago made it fresh in my mind, ripe for probably illogical connections.
On the other hand, the comments that these attackers made were so trite / inauthentic (took my mortgage? What the hell does that even mean?) and pointless, it also makes me wonder if the attackers are paid to disrupt and divide a community. When the CIA overthrew Mossadegh, they paid gangs of young men just to create havoc and divide the people, and also there have been many outsiders trying to exploit and widen divisions in American society.
In any case, I hope this man has recovered fully. And I hope it was a one time event of one crazy culprit. Though it seems like there was two recently in that community.
