Firefighters hear gunshots while battling Harbor Gateway house fire; suspect in custody

A man who opened fire as firefighters knocked down a blaze at a Harbor Gateway home is in custody, police said.

The suspect "appeared to be suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound," the Los Angeles Police Department said in a tweet. Police told the Associated Press that one person was fatally shot at the scene, but authorities said they didn't know whether the victim is a man or woman.

The shots rang out after firefighters put out the flames inside a two-story home, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. .... Four LAPD divisions as well as Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies responded to the area, authorities said.

Police urged people to avoid the neighborhood, which is not far from the 110 Freeway.
