Mike Pompeo, Confirmed as Secretary of State, Plans to Quickly Head to Europe

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON The Senate on Thursday easily confirmed Mike Pompeo as the nations 70th secretary of state, elevating the current C.I.A. director and an outspoken foreign policy hawk to be the nations top diplomat.

Mr. Pompeo was expected to be sworn in almost immediately after the vote, after which he planned to dash to Joint Base Andrews, where a plane was waiting to fly him to Brussels on his first trip abroad as secretary of state for a meeting of NATO allies.

His agenda is already packed, with crucial deadlines in the coming weeks involving Russia, North Korea, Syria and Venezuela. And he must face these challenges while trying to a repair a State Department damaged under the tenure of Rex W. Tillerson, his predecessor, and with crucial alliances frayed during the Trump presidency.

Senators were mindful of the need to get Mr. Pompeo in place, given the crush of work facing him. His confirmation seemed all but assured after Senator Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, a Democrat who is running for re-election in a state that Mr. Trump won handily, said last week that she would support him. On Monday, two other moderate Democrats who are also running for re-election in states won by Mr. Trump, Senators Joe Manchin III of West Virginia and Joe Donnelly of Indiana, also pledged their support for his nomination.

"trying to a (sic) repair a State Department"

Too late. It will take years, perhaps a decade or more.

The State Department will continue to hemorrhage career diplomats.

It was basically almost paragraph-length so I abandoned it and went to the NYT.

WaPo eventually went from this -

Mike Pompeo confirmed as secretary of state, in a move Republicans hope will rebuild morale at the State Department

to this -

Senate confirms Mike Pompeo as Trump’s next secretary of state

Especially when they seem to write something that bears little resemblance to what is in the actual article.

Fuck them. This guy is scary and unqualified. What the hell do they hope to gain? They beg and snivel for deplorable votes that they are not going to get.

Pompeo is a piece of shit. And no voter in those backwater shitholes actually cares who's secretary of state. They are pandering to morons who won't vote for them anyway. Why they fuck not go after people who typically don't vote at all? Or the educated who know Pompeo sucks.

I will be celebrating Manchin's loss, should it happen. Because all of this pandering to morons will do them no fucking good at all and it's high time they all stopped trying.

is the party infrastructure in some of those states. I.e., the weakness or even non-existence of it.

In the case of WV, there needs to be a strong union-minded Democratic bulwark coming forward, who can capture the sentiment of that state without compromising Democratic party principles.
