Signs Suggest Iran Is Speeding Up Work on Nuclear Program

Source: NYT

International nuclear inspectors will soon report that Iran has installed hundreds of new centrifuges in recent months and may also be speeding up production of nuclear fuel while negotiations with the United States and its allies have ground to a near halt, according to diplomats and experts briefed on the findings.

Almost all of the new equipment is being installed in a deep underground site on a military base near Qum that is considered virtually invulnerable to military attack. It would suggest that a boast by senior Iranian leaders late last month — that the country had added upward of 1,000 new machines to its installation despite Western sabotage — may be true.

The report will also indicate, according to the officials familiar with its contents, that Iran is increasingly focused on enriching uranium to a level of 20 percent — a purity that it says it needs for a specialty nuclear reactor that it insists is used only for medical purposes, but that outside experts say gets it most of the way to the level needed to produce a workable nuclear bomb. The report does not attempt to address the question of whether Iran has made a decision to build a nuclear weapon; American intelligence officials believe it has not, and Iran insists it wants to use nuclear power for peaceful ends.

It is unlikely that Iran has begun to use the new centrifuges to produce fuel, and even with a significant increase in fuel production it would still take months, at the least, to produce a crude weapon. By most American government estimates, Iran would need at least two years to develop a workable warhead that could fit atop a missile.

3. Iran will get make a bomb...

It is just a matter of time. Of course, if Israel attacks it would slow Iran down but they would use the attack as a justified reason to have a bomb...Then Saudi Arabia & other Gulf Countries (Sunnis) will have their bombs not long afterward.

I am not going to even begin to claim to have a solution but i do know this is a very serious problem should the middle east get into a nuclear arms race...Which will happen if Iran gets the bomb. (Shia vs Sunni)

Oh well.

If there is a nuclear exchange over there the mid east crude will now come in a new flavor: irradiated.

at the same time everything possible needs to be done to prevent Iran from building a bomb...Because once they have one then many Sunni Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia will quickly follow suit! Then there will be a nuclear arms race in the Middle East where many folks really want to die in a religious war!

6. Pakistan, an Arab Sunni country has the bomb and I

worry about that, because the government is not very stable and there are groups that would use the bomb, if they could. What is interesting is that Pakistani's stated publicly that they would only use atomic weapons on Israel, yet Israel has not tried to destroy their weapons.

7. Pakistan's bomb is really Saudi Arabia's bomb. They paid for the program and its current managers.

The argument that Iran would set off a regional arms race is nonsense if you consider that the other major player in the region, KSA, is already a de facto nuclear state.

Pakistan has also said they would use the atomic bombs on India as well...And if the radicals take over then we could see a major nuclear war between India & Pakistan!

The same goes for Iran...If they get the bomb then several Sunni Muslim countries in the Middle East will follow suit creating an nuclear arms race in the Middle East where folks want to die in a religious war...Not only that but I think many Iranians are like American Christians in that they think they bring on Armageddon to speed up the return of Jesus & the 12th Imam...So, it is just a disaster waiting to happen if Iran gets the Bomb. Plus, if they have a bomb then they can turn Hezbollah loose to attack Israel & other targets with little fear of retaliation!

These are serious problems that many here on DU like to act like do not exist. I do not want America in another war at all but that does not mean I am going to act like the middle east would be a peaceful place only if America was not there. Because there are plenty of potential disasters waiting to happen there especially if Iran goes nuclear.

I think you need to look at a map.

They do border India, with whom they have fought a number of wars in the years since 1947. India also has nuclear weapons. I suspect that is Pakistans motivation rather than a country that has no common border with them and does not possess the military means to harm them and vice versa. And yes i do include nuclear weapons, Pakistan's longest range missile has a range of 2500km, 1000km short of Israel.

Pakistan not only having the bomb, but not being able to secure it. I am not worried so much about America as I am India. If India gets one whiff that there is a real threat to there security by forces within ISI or any of the terrorist groups, they have to attack and I mean a devastating attack. I have always said that the next world war won't start in Europe or America but in South Asia.
