Gaza clashes: 52 Palestinians killed on deadliest day since 2014

Last edited Tue May 15, 2018, 11:38 AM - Edit history (1)

Source: BBC

At least 52 Palestinians have been killed and 2,400 wounded by Israeli troops, Palestinian officials say, on the deadliest day of violence since the 2014 Gaza war.

Palestinians have been protesting for weeks but deaths soared on the day the US opened its embassy in Jerusalem.

Palestinians see this as clear US backing for Israeli rule over the whole city, whose eastern part they claim.

But US President Donald Trump hailed the move in a video message.

First version of article was:

At least 18 Palestinians in Gaza have been shot dead by Israeli troops after bloody clashes erupted on the border, Palestinian officials say.
...
Gaza's Islamist rulers, Hamas, have led mass protests in a "Great March of Return" for the past six weeks. Israel says demonstrators are trying to breach the border fence.

A 14-year-old boy was among those killed on Monday and more than 900 people were injured, the Hamas-run health ministry said.

Palestinians hurled stones while the Israeli military used snipers as black smoke poured from burning tyres.

BREAKING: Gaza Health Ministry says number of Palestinians killed by Israeli fire near Gaza border has risen to 25.

5. I think that is the least of the concerns at this time, because the potential for escalated violence

from this move, along with the U.S. unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, will destabilize the entire region, and move the entire region closer to all out war.

The Democrats position needs to be to get the parties back to the negotiating table, and that is where these issues need to be discussed, but with the current administration, and the same architects of the Iraq invasion by the U.S. now in charge of mideast policy, that is very unlikely to occur

"they" want a war, and now 'they' are gong to get it. Trouble is, 'WE' get fucked.

8. I think the potential for war is significant, and the unintended consequences of the Iraq invasion

destabilized the entire region, and motivated Iran to accelerate its nuclear ambitions.

Once Iraq fell, the Shia majority essentially led the newly formed government, and you might notice that the anti-U.S. cleric, Sadr, is now making waves.

Another fact largely ignored was under bush administration, they called for elections in the Palestinian territories, when events there were not conducive to one, and it resulted in the election of the Hamas leadership:

The U.S. has made one blunder after another in the middle east, and I suspect that will continue for the foreseeable future.

Rabin and Sadat are dead, and unfortunately, so are any prospects for peace

Ironically, both Rabin and Sadat were murdered by extremists from both sides

I am no historian by any stretch of the imagination, but the whole thing from at least the British on has been one big screw up.

Israel and Iran becoming one big total disaster if things are not cooled down. The poor Kurds would have to run for the hills. Could also further destabilize Turkey and Jordon.....

Things were bad enough even with our very best diplomacy from John Kerry and his excellent crew.

15. No. Because moving the embassy was passed as a law in 1995.

U.S. Embassy, Gaza protests and Nakba Day: 37 Gazans said killed, hundreds wounded by Israeli gunfire at border

Warning: Some of the photos may make you ill. The attacks on protesters, the plaque on the building and a picture of Sheldon Adelson about did me in for the day.

These are very dangerous times, fellow DU'ers.........

13. 43 Palestinian Protesters Killed, Gaza Officials Say, As U.S. Opens Jerusalem Embassy
Mon May 14, 2018, 11:14 AM
May 2018
Tens of thousands of Palestinians are protesting the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, and Israeli army forces have killed 43 protesters, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The ministry also says some 2,200 people have been hurt in demonstrations and clashes.

More than 35,000 people are protesting along the Gaza border, the Israel Defense Forces say. The army says it killed three protesters who were trying to set a bomb next to the security fence in Rafah. It's the most deaths in one day the area has seen since the summer of 2014, when more than 2,000 Palestinians died.

The number of casualties rose steadily on Monday, as the opening of the American embassy at 4 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET) neared. The health ministry published a list of the dead, showing that their ages ranged from 14 to 39 years old.
