Trump offers 'protections' if Kim surrenders nukes

President Trump on Thursday sought to reassure North Korean leader Kim Jong Un after Kim's government threatened to pull out of the upcoming nuclear summit with the United States.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he is willing to do a lot to offer Kim protections if the North Korean leader agrees to surrender his nuclear weapons.
He will get protections that are very strong, Trump said during an Oval Office meeting with NATOs secretary-general. The best thing he could do is make a deal.
North Korea threw the June 12 summit into doubt on Wednesday when it said it may not show up if the U.S. continues to demand unilateral nuclear disarmament.

(7,220 posts)This ludicrous protection offer, after Bolton's completely unrealistic demands to completely denuclearize (a la Libya, and gee that worked out swell for their former leader) sounds faintly like a good-cop, bad-cop routine designed to start a war with NK.
1. Prompted by Bolton, Trump stops with the juvenile cyber-taunting, and says he wants to meet with Kim (both crave attention and validation, so of course they'd agree)
2. Kim says OK (Kim wants worldwide validation and acknowledgment)
3. Bolton plays "bad cop", demanding end result of meetings to be complete NK denuclearization, casually throwing in line about "Libya model"
4. Kim makes noise about backing out of meeting (of course he isn't giving up nukes, it's literally his only bargaining chip)
5. Trump offers useless "protection" (haha, this was probably Bolton's idea as well, making it look like Kim is being unreasonable)
How does this play out? Trump is beyond stupid (and would LOVE a distraction from that "Russia thing" , so it looks like Bolton gets what he wanted all along
6. Kim backs out, starts making war noises again (he's been humiliated and needs to show he's powerful)
7. Bolton says "He's threatening us! We have to take him out!"
Only a congress with a spine can stop this. And we don't have that right now. Even if we get the much-ballyhooed "blue wave" in November, there's still 2-3 months to start a war with no one to stop it.

Donny's already demonstrated that the US won't stand by any agreement a previous administration signed.
