A major donor to President Trump's inauguration reportedly hired the president's longtime personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, as a consultant amid a push to do business with Qatari officials.
The Wall Street Journal reported Monday that Franklin Haney, who donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration fund, pitched a nuclear-power investment to the Qatari sovereign-wealth fund last month.
Cohen, who is under criminal investigation, joined Haney and a leader of the Qatar Investment Authority at the meeting, where Haney sought an investment for his nuclear project. There is no indication Qatar agreed to a deal, the Journal reported.
Cohen reportedly also pitched the Qatari official on a separate infrastructure project.

Connection to Viktor Vekselberg and Payments to Michael Cohen[edit]
According to the Washington Post, "Columbus Nova has been described in federal regulatory filings as an affiliate of the Renova Group, founded by Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg".[8] The sanctioned Russian company Renova Group, itself controlled by Vekselberg, also subject to U.S. sanctions, has previously listed Columbus Nova as a controlled investment fund under the Renova Group's umbrella.[9] Per regulations administered by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), companies that are at least 50% owned by sanctioned individuals or companies are themselves subject to U.S. sanctions.[10]
On May 8, 2018, the New York Times reported that during 2017 Columbus Nova made payments of at least $500,000 to a bank account maintained by Michael Cohen, then acting as President Donald Trump's personal attorney.[11] However, the sanctions against Renova Group were not put in place until April 6, 2018,[12] so any payments from Vekselberg to Donald Trump would not have been prohibited by OFAC at the time the payments were made.[13]
