Woman Makes Racist Face At Asian-American Serviceman: This Is Not Your F**ing Country
By Kimberly Yam
A recent racist incident in Fremont, California, has the Asian-American community outraged.
James Ahn, a Korean-American member of the Air Force Reserve, was driving earlier this month when an unidentified woman in another car was caught on video pulling her eyes back and saying, This is not your fucking country.
Ahn shared the video on Facebook this past Monday, and its since been widely shared.
In the video, the woman can also be heard saying, This is my country, this is not a Chinese. Oh my god, Chinese ugly.

hell out of Fremont, out of the entire Bay Area even if she doesnt like Asians. This place has a very diverse population which for the most part lives together quite well.

(58,724 posts)More that it's depressing that this sort of thing goes on in liberally minded parts of California - not just the deep south or the midwest and such.

(20,629 posts)any area of your choice! I've lived in or near Iowa City, an ultra-liberal college town, for 30+ years, and there are Trumpanzees in and around that town and every other similar place you could put your finger on across America.

(58,724 posts)It's just somehow more disconcerting when this goes on in more liberal places with relatively few Trump voters.

(838 posts)At least according to some details dug up through social media. Shes Asian herself, of the southwest variety, and not eastern.

(129,120 posts)A significant number of the loud mouths had ancestors who arrived here after the Civil War, and notably during WWI & II, and many of the ones they yell at had ancestors here well before these know-it-alls got off the boat.

(6,831 posts)Americans know virtually nothing about Asians. And most can't be buggered to learn. The majority couldn't identify the countries or regions that comprise Asia with a map and two flashlights. Even today, I still hear people say "Orientals" when talking about people from the Far East. (FYI, People -- "oriental" refers to rugs, usually made in Persia.)
With the exception of the stereotypical Asian on some sit-com on the telly, most Americans think Asians are all one huge homogeneous culture. Couldn't be more wrong. Anyone who has ever been stationed any where there can tell you, there are VAST differences between peoples: culture, language (Both spoken and written. Sometime, compare Vietnamese to Mandarin.), habits, societal norms, taboos, cuisine, and yes, most importantly - appearance, i.e., Asians do [/b]NOT all look the same, except to eyes that do not want to see or don't care to know.
This woman assumed that Mr. Ahn was Chinese. Why ? Of all of the dozens of possibilities, why did she choose Chinese ? I'm going to guess ignorance, with a huge side order of arrogance, and a topping of pure ugly. And I'm willing to bet she has never met a Chinese individual. Or a Korean.
My sincere apologies to you, Mr. Ahn, for this nasty, racist woman. Please know that some of us understand, revere and respect you and your culture.

(838 posts)Ive been assumed to be Japanese or Korean by white people, who are either being purposefully racist or well-meaning but still racist (Im of Chinese descent). Ive been assumed to not speak English even after Ive opened my mouth and replied in perfect but heavily Texan-accented English.
Funny thing is, some Filipinos assume Im also Filipino, and will try to speak to me in Tagalog. On the other hand, the Chinese tourists I encounter at my job always know Im Chinese without fail.
