San Juan mayor: Trump administration 'completely looked away' over hurricane death toll

Source: The Hill

BY JACQUELINE THOMSEN - 06/04/18 07:29 AM EDT

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said that the Trump administration has “looked away” from Puerto Rico after a study found a significantly higher death toll from Hurricane Maria than was officially announced.

“What is staggering is that the Trump administration has completely looked away when this death toll is announced,” Cruz said on MSNBC’s “Kasie DC” on Sunday. The mayor said that while the total number of people who died as a result of last year’s storm may never be known, “hundreds or thousands died.”

A study released in the New England Journal of Medicine last month found that as many as 4,645 people died from the hurricane. The Puerto Rican government has listed the official death toll at 64, but has commissioned a study to determine a new count.

“The government of Puerto Rico remains silent and idle while the federal government under the Trump administration was looking and continued to look the other way and make things very difficult for the Puerto Rican people,” Cruz said.

mean nothing to a racist pig like trump or his party of racists. Remember the help he gave were paper towels thrown at a needy, suffering populace of men, women and worst of all, children.

This is not something America should allow to happen, especially to its own citizens. Our news media is complicit in this neglect through its lack of coverage after the first few months. As usual, no meaningful follow up stories as to the conditions these people are living through.
Just another shame we will have to live down in coming years.

He never accepted that a U.S. President (Obama) was an American citizen, so it's not surprising he considers anyone non-white to be a non-citizen.

When you put that together with his hatred and meanness, we see the true real Trump. The real Trump threw that paper in front of the TV, and walked away from the death and destruction. He didn't give a sh*t..He still doesn't give a sh*t. If it were 40, 400, or 6500 deaths..It is so obvious..

Trump doesn't give a shit!, not now, then, or ever..

drumpf knew people were dying, it's only logical with the devastation and lack of power for so long, and still made it twice as expensive to ship items there on purpose, put a hack in charge of FEMA who refused to use local labor to distribute relief so most people never received any, hired a company owned by a cabinet member's friend who employed 5 people and they were paid billions, only to have their shoddy half-assed work all come down within months, and let the people die because they are brown and so the shipping companies could maintain excessive profits. drumpf hates all brown/black people and all women who don't fall at his feet.
