The way the internet is regulated in the US is about to change.
The controversial repeal of Obama-era net neutrality protections is officially set to take effect on Monday, despite ongoing efforts from members of Congress, state officials, tech companies and advocacy groups to save the rules.
The Republican-led Federal Communications Commission voted along party lines in December to repeal the rules, which were intended to prevent internet providers from blocking, speeding up, or slowing down access to specific online services.
The order required the approval of the Office of Management and Budget, which the FCC announced receiving last month. In a statement at the time, FCC chairman Ajit Pai framed the upcoming repeal as removing burdensome regulations.
"Now, on June 11, these unnecessary and harmful internet regulations will be repealed and the bipartisan, light-touch approach that served the online world well for nearly 20 years will be restored," Pai said in a statement last month.

(1,009 posts)They made sure to screw the states too. Whatever happened to that republican motto let the states decide?! And this in itself is a rule/regulation:
"It's patently illegal for the states to make their own internet policy," Roslyn Layton, a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute who served on President Trump's transition team for the FCC, told CNNMoney last month
Pai is a master propagandist.

And this organization sits on publicly funded college and has this propagandists organization on campus and this person.....if I was living in Virginia I would be demanding an accountability of this funding......................this is not a non profit organization...................................
November 2018 cannot get here fast enough

(1,009 posts)I do wonder though if that statement is bs, and there is no way they can bar states from creating their own internet regulations.
Its like you cant believe anything anyone says in this administration.

And I bet Comcast and the other big telecoms will be taking advantage of the repub rules the very instant they take effect.

(6,933 posts)Those asshats already placed data restrictions on the Internet where I live two years ago. Funny how they didn't do it in every State or city they serve but they made sure everyone in Kansas is under a data lockdown thumb. Oh...they'll gladly sell you MORE if you go over your monthly allotment at a rip off price.
After blowing smoke for a decade about how everyone NEEDS and just has to have HSI and all the wonderful things you can do compared to dial up they up and put a month restriction on it once they get everyone signed up. For those asshats it's not a big surprise right along with their annual rate increase.

We will join Oregon and Washington to form a big block of NN on the West coast.

(2,195 posts)etc. buying time and keeping the Corporatists busy putting them out
until we get the right people in office. If several states independently
and together took actions what exactly would these would-be owners
of the Commons actually do and how long would it take them? Make
them come out in the open and shine the spotlight on them.

(14,494 posts)be even less informed. Slower, more restricted access will mean more difficult access to news, banking, medical info, etc. - so a more dumbed-down public that will have to jump through more hoops to get business done.
Also, an unleashed banking system, weakened industrial pollution controls and weaker labor regulations will take a slow toll on the less fortunate.......

(2,574 posts)Ending net neutrality is so obviously contrary to the majority wish of Americans. This needs to be megaphoned over & over by all our candidates for dogcatcher on up to US Senate. This is as big an issue as Repugs killing precondition coverage, in fact larger because it hurts EVERYONE.( The legit response Pai got in his "public" feedback was like 90% Against ending net neutrality.)
Our Dem candidates have got to STOP the MSM from letting Repug message, framing & candidates from dominating our national and local news. They must get out front on this, demand news stations give them equal time. And on Net Neutrality, ending it is already the Repug message. The American people & Dem candidates deserve to be heard on such a fundamental. usurpation of our
constitutional rights.
