Obama gets hurricane briefing, calls Scott

Source: USA Today

TAMPA -- The Republicans -- at their convention in Florida -- aren't the only ones keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Isaac.

President Obama received a briefing on the potential storm and called Florida Gov. Rick Scott about federal-state cooperation.

Obama told Scott that the administration "would continue to make resources available as necessary to support the state as the Governor's team prepares for and responds to the storm," said a White House readout.

"The President also told the governor to let him know if there are any unmet needs or additional resources the Administration could provide," said the White House statement.

The full White House statement:

Today, President Obama received a briefing on preparations underway for Tropical Storm Isaac, which could become a hurricane as early as today. The FEMA Administrator, Craig Fugate, and National Hurricane Center Director, Dr. Rick Knabb, briefed the President on the projected track and timing of the storm as well as steps being taken by the Administration to support potentially impacted states. During the briefing, the President directed Administrator Fugate to make sure FEMA continues to coordinate closely with state and local officials in potentially impacted states and address the needs of local communities as the storm approaches. FEMA has already deployed teams to Florida and Louisiana ahead of the storm to support state and local preparations, and is in close communication with Alabama and Mississippi and other southeastern states that could be impacted. NOAA's National Hurricane Center has issued a Hurricane Warning for portions of Florida, and a Hurricane Watch has been issued for coastal areas of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

At this point I think the RNC has no real storm related worries but it's been enjoyable seeing their agenda get screwed with. I'm more concerned with MY people on the coast and in New Orleans. A hurricane's nothing to trifle with, and there's enough PTSD to go around. Here's hoping (and anticipating) President Obama does well by whomever gets hit.

I'm going to be waiting to see how much compassion the Republicans have for whomever it hits, or will they be smugly grave-dancing and claiming the power of prayer again.

Stay safe, all y'all.

By The Associated Press, Herald-Tribune / Thursday, September 8, 2011

Gov. Rick Scott and the Republican-led Legislature have rejected or declined to pursue more than $106 million in federal grant money and returned another $4.5 million for programs linked to federal health care initiatives, including cancer prevention, leading critics to say he is putting his conservative agenda ahead of residents’ needs.

Scott ordered state agencies to reject any money tied to President Barack Obama’s health care plan, which Florida is challenging in court, but Scott kept more than $13 million for a four-year abstinence education grant and for another program coordinating background checks for long-term care workers.

The figures, which are totals of funds that could have been obtained over five years, were provided by the governor’s office...more
