Hillary Clintons former campaign chairman on Thursday excoriated fired FBI Director James Comey, saying there is good evidence that his actions in the final days of the 2016 presidential campaign blew the election for Democrats.
Im not going to defend Jim Comey. I criticized him from the day he dropped a letter to [lawmakers] ... right before the election, John Podesta said during an interview on The Hills new morning TV show, "Rising."
He refused to take the advice of senior people in the Justice Department, so Im not going to defend him," Podesta told co-host Krystal Ball just hours before the release of a Justice Department inspector general report. Observers expect that report to be critical Comeys leadership of the FBI, including his decision to announce a reopening of the Clinton email investigation just days before the election.
Podesta said it is possible Comey cost Clinton an election win, but that he did not believe President Trump fired the FBI chief in the midst of the Russia probe just because he hurt the former Democratic rival. "On the other hand, do you think there is anyone in America, whether they watch Fox News, MSNBC or watch The Hill.com, who believes Donald Trump fired Jim Comey because he was unfair to Hillary Clinton and kind of blew the election for us, which there is good evidence he did," he said.

(16,104 posts)I know when Comey made both those announcements in 2016, it hurt Hillary's chances, especially with a certain liberal progressive set who mistrusted Hillary more than the Dotard (proof of the effectiveness of relentless propaganda).
Look at the turnout, look at the support for 3rd party candidates, look at the discrepancy between primary and general election voting, look at the polling just before - Comey turned the election.
Like Podesta, that's all I need to know about it.

(4,009 posts)I can't think of a bigger problem than a single unacceptable action changing the result of a presidential election. It has not yet been litigated, so it can't be re-litigated yet.

(37,748 posts)This isn't litigation, this is observation and commentary.
Among the bigger problems you reference is the desire to move forward without looking back, rationalizing it by stating "we have bigger problems".
This is a wonderful learning opportunity for you. Good luck.

(10,500 posts)Comey didn't just hurt Clinton's chances. He turned the entire election upside down. Twice.

(30,813 posts)Of course it was obvious to us at the time, but this way it is on record and that's how it goes down in the history books.
I don't see this as relitigating the past and I am surprised some DUers think so. Instead it is one of the final chapters in the saga that was the 2016 election. Another will be the Mueller report on Russian interference.
Hopefully in the future the FBI and other government organizations will keep their hands off the scales in an election.

(15,370 posts)else! She was overwhelmed by the worst bunch of personal and political propaganda EVER - both from inside the nation and outside!
In spite of it all, she STILL received three million more votes than Orange Twitler!
And people tell me to "get over it." I NEVER will.
