Top Democrats say the long-awaited report released by the Justice Department's internal watchdog on Thursday proves that the FBI's handling of the Clinton email investigation helped Donald Trump win the 2016 presidential election.
"It was Trump who benefited from all these mistakes so it hardly reflects deep state or bias against him. ... At the end of the day, the actions reviewed in this report helped Donald Trump win the election, not the other way around," Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) told reporters on Thursday.
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, added that then-FBI Director James Comey and other FBI officials "made serious errors of judgement" that "had the effect of helping the Trump campaign."

Schumer and Schiff, along with Sens. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the top Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee and Senate Judiciary Committee; House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.); Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee and House Oversight Committee, held a press conference hours after the inspector general's report was released.

(15,286 posts)It's pointless to keep talking about it. I say this because I believe things happen for a reason. If Clinton had been elected, yes, there'd be a check on the crazy and maybe - maybe - there'd be a few liberal judges confirmed to vacancies and there'd be a better cabinet and honest administration for sure. But we all know the rw hate machine would be working overtime to discredit everything she touched or had ever touched. They're well-schooled after 40 years of Clinton bashing. She would be being endlessly investigated and blamed by the GOP controlled Congress for anything and everything. That would lead, imho, to mid-term gains for Rs and a tightening on their grip on power.
Because Clinton lost, the GOP had now been exposed for what it is, interested only in having and keeping power and doing whatever is necessary to attain that goal. They are friends to haters and reactionaries. They've been exposed and having no morals, no ethics, no policies that help anyone but themselves and their rich benefactors and friends. None of this would be front and center today had Clinton won.
Democrats are the most motivated I've seen since Watergate and poised to make huge gains in November owing to Clinton loss. The bottomline is even good can come out of bad situations.
