National professors' group formally censures UNL for handling of incident with conservative student

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Rick Ruggles

The Turning Point USA debacle just won't leave the University of Nebraska-Lincoln alone.

A national professors' organization voted Saturday in Washington, D.C., to formally censure, or rebuke, UNL administrators for the way they handled discipline in a conflict between a liberal graduate student-lecturer and a conservative undergraduate.

UNL now will go on the American Association of University Professors' censure list of about 55 colleges and universities. Most are small schools, but the list also includes the University of Missouri. Mizzou was censured for its treatment of the dismissal of a faculty member who asked for "muscle" to remove a journalist from a 2015 protest.

AAUP censures typically involve findings that schools failed to respect faculty members' right to academic freedom, tenure or due process when disciplined.

we don't learn with an open mind anymore. sides are chosen beforehand. If teachers aren't allowed to teach their beliefs, what have we got? may as well read a bland middle-ground Cliff notes and bag the course.

It's been said of academia that those who get ahead just suck up to those in power who teach them. Can you get a PhD if you are diametrically opposed to the belief system of your tenured faculty advisor? You're going to get ground down and eased out. It's how you get ahead in an organizational structure. If you must praise Milton Friedman, you praise Milton Friedman.

And if you're a conservative, why would you go to a liberal department for a degree? Or vice versa? Academia has become a place of righteous proselytizing for the right. Everything is a place to conquer. Any leftist power structure is getting the worst of it these days.
