Trump accuses Canadians of smuggling U.S. goods across the border to get around 'massive' tariffs

Trump said Canada imposes such onerous tariffs on U.S. products -- shoes, for instance -- that people are forced to 'scuff 'em up' in order to 'smuggle' them home

OTTAWA U.S. President Donald Trump is accusing Canadians of buying products south of the border, then sneaking them back home all because of what he calls massive tariffs on American goods.
Trump, speaking to a gathering of small business owners in Washington, is railing again against the North American Free Trade Agreement, saying the U.S. can no longer afford to be the stupid country.
He says Canada imposes such onerous tariffs on U.S. products shoes, for instance that people are forced to scuff em up in order to smuggle them home.
Trump says hes looking out for American farmers and manufacturers, and again takes issue with Canadas supply management system for dairy farmers.

(12,586 posts)The Mexicans can't complain about being forced to build their own wall, and the Canadians never complain about anything. Donnie Two Scoops gets what he's always wanted -- a country isolated from the rest of the world -- and the other two countries don't have to build walls between themselves and the U.S.
That seems like a win-win-win situation to me.
Now, about those pesky international airlines flying in people who aren't real Americans ---

This was the first thing that occurred to me, too. In a recent WaPo oped, the conservative-but-Trump-hating columnist Max Boot called Trump the "most unethical, unhinged, and racist president in American history." Yup, all of the above.
At a book signing a few weeks ago, a psychiatrist (noting how intelligence agencies draw up psychological profiles of world leaders) asked James Clapper what he would write if he were drawing up a profile of Trump. He demurred (having already that day been on the back end of one of T's tweetstorms), but said, "If I were a foreign intelligence agencies, I'd focus on his unpredictability."
He is a madman. And one with no ethics, no understanding of what really makes our country great, or any sense of responsibility to anyone or any cause except his own selfish interests.

(11,885 posts)Making up facts to justify what he wants to do is a regular past time of this illegitimate president . I don't believe much from this corrupt criminal , and he has a plan against Canada, which I fear its putin wanting to annex again using trump to do it, or egging him on while he invades Georgia, and trump goes after Canada, or Mexico. We're seeing just the tip of the ice burg right now how he'' escalates this to do as he pleases using made up excuses , again.

(3,016 posts)for us to go down there and buy stuff and yeah, take the tags off and shove it in a bag. And there are people who secure US postal addresses or friendly mail drops there, it's true.
It was more common when the dollar was closer to par though.
But it wasn't about tariffs. Stuff is just cheaper there and Canadians, like anyone else, like to save money too. It's not a conspiracy, Donald.

(33,643 posts)theory be due to the cost of a tariff being levied upon the final price in Canada?
Granted in reality the stuff you're talking about is probably almost never an actual 'made in the USA' item, but if it were ... I'm not sure you could rule out the possibility that the price is lower in the US due to the lack of paying tariffs. It's kinda exactly the effect you'd expect a tariff to have. Just sayin' ...
EllieBC
(3,016 posts)Prices here are higher because of taxes (multiple layers including carbon taxes) and supply and demand. We have far fewer people so fewer items that cost more.

(3,282 posts)Most of those shoes are not made in the USA, they're Asian imports, so Trump is complaining about Canada's tariffs on Asian products. Also, if Canadians are going down to the USA to purchase those shoes, they're pumping money into US retailers, at the expense of Canadian retailers, so really this is a net benefit to the USA.
There is a thread about it here:

Also, this was a big thing in Canada about 15-25 years ago. When the US dollar was much higher than the CAD, and prices in the US were incredibly low, there was a huge problem with cross-border shopping in Canada. But it was a problem to Canada, not the USA. It was a big boon to US retailers around the border who were getting the benefit of all of those Canadian shoppers hopping the border for a weekend shopping trip!

I predict that sometime today, carloads of lumber from lumber from the Evil Empire of the North will pass WITHIN THE VERY SHADOW OF THE CAPITOL (assuming that we are somehow transported to the Southern Hemisphere, so that shadows from buildings to the north of the railroad tracks will fall up trains to the south of those buildings).

(10,303 posts)Isn't one allowed an allowance of things that can be imported personally on a vacation type trip? Or is this more of a European thing? Hitting the "Duty Free" at the airports is usually a big thing in international airports. Yeah it's normally stuff like cigarettes, alcohol, etc but when I worked retail in the UK I'd often have requests for VAT paperwork so when the customer left the European Economic Area they could claim back the VAT they paid on their purchase.
