Michael Cohen has hired a veteran trial lawyer to represent him in the Southern District of New Yorks criminal investigation into his financial dealings.
Both Vanity Fair and CNN reported Tuesday that President Trumps longtime fixer has retained Guy Petrillo, former head of the criminal division for the U.S. Attorneys office in Manhattan.
Cohen is currently deciding whether to cooperate with federal prosecutors investigating him for bank fraud, campaign finance violations, and other possible financial crimes. Petrillo did not immediately return TPMs request for comment.
Reports surfaced last week that Cohen would part ways with his team at McDermott, Will and Emery for an attorney better acquainted with the office that is prosecuting him. A trio of McDermott lawyers lead by Stephen Ryan oversaw a privilege review of hundreds of thousands of documents seized from Cohens premises in April.

That seems to be the MO of all these ratfuckers. Get caught red-handed, have absolutely no exonerating evidence to disprove the allegations, make ad hominem attacks against the accuser.
It's a timeless ploy made all the more cloying by the obvious guilt of the defendant and the gravity of the crimes involved.

I suspect his Qatar funded previous lawyer wasn't thrilled about his willingness to not eat a bullet for Trump, and this undoubtedly had a lot to do with why they parted ways.

(2,309 posts)There goes his Fifth Amendment for the feds. But he still faces any number of state charges for different matters--and in different states. (E.g., New York, for god knows what financial shenanigans; possible fraud in California for dealing with his dealings with Stormy Daniels & her lawyer.) And, of course, civil liability. Russian assassin liability. And possible prosecution by various European countries. Etc.
