Trump signs order temporarily ending his own family separation policy after days of falsely blaming Democrats
20 Jun 2018 at 15:11 ET
...............................
His administration ordered the separation of children from their parents at the border as a result of their zero-tolerance prosecutions of immigrants seeking refuge in the U.S.
Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen drafted the order Wednesday, and Trump signed it a short time later.
The president had hoped to use the detained children as leverage to force Democrats to agree to legislation funding a border wall and other Republican anti-immigration measures.
Trumps executive order will try to get around a 1997 consent decree that prohibits the federal government from keeping children in immigrant detention, even with their parents, for more than 20 days.
That will almost certainly trigger a court challenge............................................

(7,220 posts)Yeah, nice try, and WAY to little, WAY too late. As mothers (one an immigrant mother, mind you), they should have been out there loud and clear from the get-go. Screw them and the $1000 Louboutin's they walked in on.

(51,640 posts)Wall funding? This is not over but a small victory. Many small victories are coming if we keep this up as a country and pressure them.
Well, it is good to know that the mayors going to TX centers, governors refusing to send Nat. Troops for the border, major airlines refusing to assist the fake prez, news coverage, the entire Senate mad, many congressmen running for reelection mad, Session's Methodist Church mad at him, the protesters, Rachel crying, etc all got to him.
RESISTANCE WORKS! Well done and thanks to everybody involved.
WE DID IT! We can do it again.

(12,221 posts)One minute they are denying it is going on.
The next minute they are defending it.
Then, they are commending Trump for ending it.
Wow. What a strange group of people, lead by a strange person.

(9,898 posts)but as a narcissist having to back track he will now have to strike back in order to refuel his tanks. And soon. Unless, of course, he actually believes that he is ending 60 years of this horrible practice.

(15,290 posts)have both noted the EO, as written, sets up a confrontation with the Courts as it will ultimately violate the 1997 order that asylum seekers have a hearing within 20 days. Both think this is the plan, not an unintended consequence.
Also, earlier on MSNBC, they interviewed an attorney who works for an organization funded with federal tax money and contracted by the federal gov't that provides lawyers for immigrant children. He said a week or two ago, they were abruptly issued a stop work contract order meaning there will be no lawyers for the kids when they have their own immigration hearings.

(7,220 posts)Instead of rescinding the zero tolerance policy (for a misdemeanor), now the kids will be in prison. And when the parents go to court, the children will still be separated, left in the care of Federal agents.
This is not a humane solution. It will also be challenged in the courts.
