Latinos on pace to outnumber whites in Texas by 2022: data

Source: The Hill

BY ARIS FOLLEY - 06/21/18 10:26 AM EDT

Hispanic Texans are set to outnumber non-Hispanic whites in the Lone Star State as soon as 2022, according to new data released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday.

The data accounts for the state’s population growth through last July and reflects the extent to which the state’s white population has flattened in comparison to growing numbers among people of color, state demographer Lloyd Potter told the Dallas Morning News.

Potter said the median age in the state increased from 34.5 to 34.6 between July 2016 and July 2017.

“Even though we’re one of the youngest states, we are getting older,” Potter told the news outlet.

and make sure they register and turn out to vote against the monsters who separate kids from their mothers and lock them in cages.

Texan Republicans are going to learn a painful lesson in what sort of people are US citizens and vote.

If you combine Latinos with the significant number of Democratic voters of Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio (already a large number of Latino voters), Democrats would have a chance of taking back some state offices as well as federal ones. We might then have some sanity and a state legislature that does something besides punish pregnant women and wrangle over which bathroom people, especially school children can use. Considering that the entire transgender population in the U.S. is estimated at 0.7%, including adults and children, it’s a religious solution in search of a nonexistent problem. Republicans failed to pass their bill in the last legislative session, but it hasn’t gone away. At their recent state convention, passing a bathroom bill was front and center.

State Republicans are quick to take credit for the economic growth in this state, but anyone who looks closely will see that most of the growth has taken place in the large cities controlled by Democratic mayors and business people. We need to pound on the message that while state officials were busy trying to figure out how to regulate bathroom use, Democrats were busy growing the economy and jobs.

keeping in mind their demographic is one of the groups most hurt by the GOP's policies. I've had many conversations with my Latino friends and colleagues and my impression is many don't want to be bothered by voting primarily because they either don't understand the political process, are apathetic towards it, or many (being Christian) are hung up on their conservative views such as on the abortion issue. You can lead a horse to water...

and engaged in the political process especially in these times. I get the reasons why they aren't, but groups and organizations should foster more voter education and outreach, or folks can make the effort themselves.

We know people who aren't engaged much politically, some view it like a 'hobby', and they usually only vote in the presidential election highlighted for months in mainstream media. Some are multi generation whites, others of Asian, Cuban and Mexican heritage. Most have education and are middle class; quite a few are women sorry to say. But lately women are becoming more involved which is great.

Consumed by work, making money and family matters, so many don't take the time to follow decent, honest news. Re politics, if Americans knew one tenth of what they know about Sports, things would be different.
Knowing civics was fairly standard 30+ years ago but that's greatly declined esp. in schools where it was once taught widely. In Europe people are more informed and regularly discuss politics I know for a fact.

The basics of civics and the political process isn't that difficult to learn, and in a democracy we know it's critical. The reason why Freedom of the Press was included in the US Constitution, so Americans would be informed by news sources in order to elect govt. lawmakers and officials to represent them. With people's lives and welfare at stake now, hopefully renewed political interest of late will continue. Otherwise, it's more loss of democracy and human rights, pain and Hell.

The warmest, most welcoming people down there were of Hispanic origin. I loved trying to speak Spanish again and they were very forgiving of the gringo trying it.
