Rhode Island bill would keep Trump off 2020 ballot unless he releases his tax returns

Source: MSN

Morgan Gstalter 2 hrs ago

Rhode Island's state Senate passed a bill this week that would keep candidates off the presidential ballot in their state if they don't release five years' worth of tax returns, according to the Providence Journal.

Sen. Gayle Goldin (D), who sponsored the bill, noted that every presidential candidate since Richard Nixon released their tax returns voluntarily until President Trump ran for office.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that he cannot release his tax returns because he is under audit, but the IRS said an audit does not prevent a candidate from releasing their personal tax information.

Goldin argued that "tax returns provide essential information about candidates' conflicts of interest."

No idea why. I hope they try again. This would likely keep Bernie off ballots, too.

"Today we require tax returns, but what would be next?" Brown wrote. "Five years of health records? A certified birth certificate? High school report cards? And will these requirements vary depending on which political party is in power?"

It could be used as a tool to keep certain people out of the presidency, unfairly.

I mean, that's just a silly analogy.

Tax returns ARE requested of Presidents, anyway. A state REQUIREMENT law would just make it mandatory rather than discretionary.

I think he doesn't like it, because it's a restriction on CANDIDATES, which he has been a time or two, and may be again. He doesn't want to go down that road because HE doesn't want to have to do it.

Try again, and this time with critical thought.

(Slippery Slope: relatively small first step leads to a chain of related events culminating in some significant (usually negative) effect, often lacking any objective evidence directing that A will in fact, lead to B, then to C and so on)

We need to see everyone's tax returns, even if they are too old to run and not members of our party.

especially for offices with the high-level powers such as presidents and governors that are highly vulnerable to corruption.

We're going to be many years undoing the corruption and misdeeds of the tRump administration, including dozens of court cases to be settled. I suspect if he had released his returns, we would not be experiencing these troubles.
