'Occupy ICE' protests emerge across the country
Source: The Hill
Protesters are occupying Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities across the country, inspired by a Portland protest that resulted in the indefinite shutdown of an ICE detention center on Wednesday. "Occupy ICE" protesters are blocking the loading dock of ICE headquarters in New York, have set up tents in front of an ICE facility in Los Angeles and are gathered outside of a detention center in Washington state.
Though the protests are not led by any one group, the Democratic Socialists of America are involved in most states, alongside groups associated with prison abolition, immigration rights and anarchist collectives. The protests are calling for an abolition of ICE and an end to what they call human rights abuses by the criminal justice system, alongside other reforms.
The Portland protest began in response to the Trump administration's policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the border, a result of the administration's "zero tolerance" policy toward illegal border crossings.
ICE spokeswoman Carissa Cutrell told The Hill on Wednesday that the agency "fully respects the rights of all people to voice their opinion without interference" and "ICE remains committed to immigration enforcement consistent with federal law and agency policy."

(51,630 posts)protesters at the Keep Families Together rally in San Diego today. They should have had a separate rally since they interrupted the planned rally and we couldn't hear our Dem Congressman Scott Peters.

(26,490 posts)but Occupy ICE isnt about rallies, its about occupying ICE facilities to disrupt ICE operations, so it is not likely that it was such folks who made it hard for you to hear.

(51,630 posts)They had "Abolish ICE" signs and all, which is fine by me just not in the middle of an ongoing rally.

(26,490 posts)The immediate goal is to gum up and disable ICE operations as much as possible. In Portland, they have been quite successful, thus far.

"The protests are calling for an abolition of ICE and an end to what they call human rights abuses by the criminal justice system, alongside other reforms."
That would imply that there would be zero border enforcement of any kind.
While many here may support that, I don't think that is at all reasonable. Our country needs to have some screening process of who and what contraband is coming across both borders wouldn't you agree? We are incapable of absorbing the entire population of Mexico and Central America
Not one of our Democratic politicians is calling for ICE to be eliminated

(7,968 posts)I'm wondering, honestly, where is the resistance movement? We should be blocking buses and more. Why is it taking so long to organize the resistance? Is it because those who resist are not organized for an ICE crises? We should be.
