Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) said at least 10 migrant infants and toddlers separated from their parents at the U.S.Mexico border are being held in detention ceners near Miami. Wasserman Schultz told The Miami Herald on Saturday that the children ranging from newborns to 5 years old were separated from their parents in so-called tender-age shelters."
The lawmaker said officials gave her a document that revealed the Miami-Dade County shelters, His House Childrens Home and Catholic Charities' Msgr. Bryan Walsh Childrens Village formerly known as Boys Town are housing an additional 88 children between ages of 6 and 12.
A Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson could not immediately confirm the numbers provided by Wasserman Schultz.
"These are specialized facilities, licensed by the state, that are fully capable of taking care of very young children," Mark Weber, the spokesperson, told the newspaper.

(14,494 posts)Anyone else see an issue with using that title, considering that children should be with their PARENTS during their tender years?
I appreciate the compassion of those working in these facilities - this horror is not of their doing. I'm sure they're doing the best they can under the circumstances. However, in what I would call a "shelter", the occupants are free to go at will.
How about calling them what they are: "Prisons for babies and toddlers who have been taken from parents seeking asylum".
