'American values are being shredded:' Families Belong Together March organizers speak out
Source: Chicago Tribune
I asked Willenson and Jbara to sit down with me Monday and talk about Saturdays march, which theyre helping organize. Progressive activist group Indivisible Chicago, the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, the National Immigrant Justice Center and more than a dozen other groups are partnering for the march lining up permits, speakers, musicians, transportation and other logistics.
More than 50,000 people have responded going or interested on the Facebook page set up to publicize the march, but Willenson, who got involved through a group called Lawyer Moms of America, said shes hearing reports of churches busing entire congregations to the march and other mass attendees who may not be RSVPing.
Marchers are scheduled to gather in Daley Plaza at 11 a.m. Faith leaders will lead the group in a convocation. Blues musician Melody Angel will perform.
Weve gone past a line where I can no longer not be on the streets protesting, Willenson said. Were witnessing the cruel and inhumane treatment of children. Theres no mechanism to reunite them with their families. Were treading perilously close, Willenson said, to repeating some of the darkest chapters of our nations history two in particular.

(51,626 posts)for people who aren't near a march or can't go that day. You can write, call, donate, sign petitions, etc. We had a protest in San Diego on June 1st but only 50 came. By June 23 (last Sat) there were 5,000 protesters. On the 20th they announced the June 30th protest in DC and only 6 cities were signed up. Three days later the number of cities had grown to over 500! I expect the DC march to be as big as March For Our Lives.
RESIST! REMOVE! Peace. Spread the word..THANKS!

I feel like a cheerleader these days. It is extremely frustrating. I do see progress personally though. After the first Women's March my neighbor saw me making a protest sign and told me that the momentum would lose steam. Since then she has attended two more marches with me and today she called and asked if I was going to the march on Sat and if she could come with me. We need passion, energy and steady feet and voices in massive numbers calling, writing, attending town halls NOW! I am not loosing my momentum a bit. The anger energizes me to fight harder.

(17,390 posts)Part of it is just to connect with actual people. I would not be surprised if 1/3 of the folks on forums and facebooks are schills and bots who are simply trying to disrupt the conversation. That is why it is important to get back to the roots and organizes together with real people.
