President Donald Trump has asked advisers their opinions about nominating Utah Senator Mike Lee to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court, according to three people familiar with the matter.
It remains early in the selection process for a nomination that will be a crucial part of Trumps legacy, choosing a justice who is likely to serve on the court for decades and cement its ideological balance to the most conservative in generations.
Trump hasnt settled on a favorite yet for the nomination, two of the people said. And even as the president mulls the 47-year-old Lee as a potential choice, the search for Kennedys successor remains wide open.
Trump thinks Lee would be easily confirmed by the Senate, but the president has expressed concern about keeping his Senate seat in Republican hands, one person said. All of the people spoke on condition of anonymity to describe private deliberations.

(12,682 posts)Is that a safe GOP seat? If not, I'd be worried.
Oh well.

(37,648 posts)Lee criticized Trump last year and said he should step down. And if he goes to the bench, that vacates a Republican senate seat. I don't see that as a serious candidate for nomination. I expect he's on the list only because he's a slam dunk for right to life? Just a guess.

(843 posts)If Lee can't vote things look better. McCain is out, Flake and Corker can be brought over to our side. Collins is a possibility for a NO vote. We may be able to stall Trump until after the mid term elections if things go our way.

Corker might...he's leaving. Collins? Only if she's secretly planning on leaving soon, to run for Governor. But she just got re-elected.
Flake might...he's leaving.
So that's two. But they are Republicans. Republicans generally fall in line with what the party wants. If Corker & Flake stay in politics, they'll need the support of the party.
This is a chance in a lifetime to stack the S.Ct. with loyalists. The party will insist that every Republican confirm the nominee. There will be no exceptions. There may even be secret promises made (but check w/Collins about how those promises work out...she was promised something for her vote on a bill, and they reneged on it, after she voted).
