Missing Thai boys 'found alive' in caves

All 12 boys and their football coach have been found alive after nine days missing in caves in Thailand, the regional governor says.
All 13 are safe, Narongsak Osottanakorn confirmed, speaking after a mammoth search operation in the Tham Luang caves in Chiang Rai.
They were discovered by naval special forces, he said.
Rescuers had hoped they would find safety from flooding on a mound in an underground chamber.

This will make one hell of a movie!!

(36,875 posts)The divers had concentrated Monday on securing a rope line and placing oxygen tanks along the narrow passageway that led them to the boys, aged 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach, who disappeared when flooding trapped them after entering the Tham Luang Nang Non cave on June 23.
Thai navy SEAL divers and rescue workers from other countries made initial progress through the narrow passageway early Monday after passing through a key chamber on Sunday whose high, murky waters had previously blocked their progress.
Narongsak said the passageway the divers were making their way through goes upward in some places and downward in others and is extremely narrow, which made it difficult for divers with all their gear to fit through.

His years as a monk would be invaluable to keep the kids calm during the ordeal.
It was a miracle that he could get them to Pattaya Beach

The Governor of Chieng Rai has done a great job in getting assets in place and giving calm but hopeful updates.
They are now sending in medical personnel that can scuba dive to treat the 13.

MAE SAI, Thailand (AP) The Latest on the search for 12 boys and their soccer coach in a cave in northern Thailand (all times local):
11:50 p.m.
A leading American cave rescue expert says many challenges are ahead for rescue divers in Thailand who located the 12 boys and their soccer coach who had been missing in a cave for more than a week.
Anmar Mirza, the U.S. National Cave Rescue Commission coordinator, says the primary decision is now one of whether to try to evacuate them or to supply them in place.
He says "supplying them on site may face challenges depending on how difficult the dives are. Trying to take non-divers through a cave is one of the most dangerous situations possible, even if the dives are relatively easy."
He says that "if the dives are difficult then supply will be difficult, but the risk of trying to dive them out is also exponentially greater."

(34,136 posts)They've found the boys all alive but none of them know how to swim. Getting them out will be difficult since they have to navigate narrow passages that are now underwater. It would take months to get them out - they may have to teach the boys how to swim before they can make the attempt.
Here is the Today Show coverage:
All 12 missing youth soccer team players and their coach were found alive Monday after being trapped in a flooded cave system in Thailand for 10 days. The boys, ranging from ages 11 to 16, were still wearing their soccer gear when found. But now, a risky rescue effort is ahead, as experts say it could be weeks if not months until they can retrieve the team safely. NBCs Janis Mackey Frayer reports for TODAY from Thailand.
