Pence launches Midwest damage control mission

Source: Politico

With anxiety rising over Trump’s trade policies, the vice president is stumping for endangered incumbents and reassuring big GOP donors.

By NATASHA KORECKI 07/11/2018 05:04 AM EDT

CHICAGO — Vice President Mike Pence begins a campaign swing through the Midwest on Wednesday designed to fire up the base in three battleground House districts. But there’s also a secondary mission: damage control.

In the face of a trade war that intensified just four days ago, Pence is quietly setting up one-on-one meetings with major Midwestern donors where he is prepared to blunt concerns over an escalating situation that’s beginning to wreak havoc on markets, farmers and employers across the region.

“The cost and impact is being felt by farmers for several weeks now. It’s real. It’s a fact. It’s happening,” said Kirk Leeds, Iowa Soybean Association CEO. “Even if we find a way, between China and the United States, to find a political face-saving compromise, it’s the long-term consequences of the disruption in these trade patterns that we worry about.”

The vice-president’s trip — announced Monday, just days after the United States leveled a 25 percent tariff on $34 billion of Chinese goods and China enacted equivalent retaliatory tariffs — will take him to Kansas City, Cedar Rapids and Chicago, where he’ll meet privately with big donors and attend fundraisers for three embattled Republican House incumbents.

to re-assure midwestern farmers who are being decimated by the tariffs is to make every attempt to raise more campaign funds from big moneyed donors to keep the Idiot party in power? How does that help anyone but the wealthy?

"Davis fears the repercussions of a long-term trade impasse. “We spent 35 years now working on this, trying to get trade with China to this point … It’s going to take years now to get this back.”

If Obama had pulled this pissing match STUNT they'd be calling for his head, but they know where the MONEY is and they'll play the sad pissed off Pugs until Pence holds their hands and tells them they'll RAPE tax payers for a subsidy bailout so no worries...........

6. Iowa: "devastating impact tariffs will have on the state"

"Nowhere is the economic unease surrounding those policies more apparent than in Iowa, where the state’s Republican congressional delegation at first vowed to stand behind Trump and urged Iowans to be patient as the president worked out a deal they believed would improve the U.S. economy in the long-run.

Their posture is already showing signs of changing, however — two weeks ago the state’s two senators and three GOP congressmen sent the administration a joint letter reiterating the devastating impact tariffs will have on the state."

I hope farmers are able to survive and keep their farms, but I also hope they learn a lesson: that when you vote for a charlatan and a con artist, don’t be surprised when he runs his con on you. They chose an amoral, ignorant, racist fool for president because they wanted him to get even with all the liberals who think all people ahould have rights and who are giving away their tax dollars to all the Mexicans and black people, who they believe are all here illegally no matter where they were born. Make America white again.

and a great deal more besides to be successful. They voted for Trump because they believed his promises. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but not stupid.

and things are not going well. Minnesota has had many trading commission meetings with countries all over the world to build markets for their products. They are taking tRump's trade war personally as they see years of work on their part going down the drain. It is also hard for farmers to see their crops rotting in front of them because they have no market in which to sell them. Consumers will also be feeling the pinch in the not too distant future. Grocery bills are already climbing. This is what we get when a stupid know-it-all thinks he can play the international community. Another industry hit will be machining. My trumper sisters family works in farm machinery manufacturing. They are starting to look at their jobs being threatened as well. Cash strapped farmers do not buy new machinery and their overseas customers are not going to be able to pay the increased cost of tariffs and still buy their products. Time will tell if they "get the message".

They might not vote at all, which is almost as good.

Also, they might close the purse strings for the campaign coffers, citing (perhaps legitimately) poor economic circumstances.

You and your fundie friends want Armageddon and figure this is one way to get there. Ripping children from the arms of their parents and throwing them in cages is not enough for you and your friends, is it? Now you are starting a trade war that will lead us to depression and war. Gee, I guess we will have to "normalize" witnessing millions of starving children in the streets too!! Fuck You!!

They should have been doing this before the tariffs were announced and solicited input as to the impact on farmers and others and what might be done to mitigate the impact. Trump has unleashed a shit storm and Pence is not going to be able to clean it up.
